The Great Commission

We are in the series Back to the Basics: We started with the Gospel of Jesus Christ. The good news that Jesus, Yashua, the Word of God, loves you and died for your sins and on the third day, was raised up.
Then we learned about baptism and what that means. The history and purpose of baptism.
Today we will look at what is called the great commission. It is the marching orders, if you will that Jesus gives to his disciples to make more disciples.
Jesus was raised from the dead, the tomb was empty. The angel told Mary and Mary that Jesus went ahead of them. So they go to tell the disciples what they found. Jesus met them on the way and told them:
Matthew 28:10 NASB95
10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and take word to My brethren to leave for Galilee, and there they will see Me.”
The disciples did as they were instructed and Jesus met them there where he gave them good news, instruction and a promise. Matthew 28: 18-20 is what we call the great commission.
Matthew 28:16–20 NASB95
16 But the eleven disciples proceeded to Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had designated. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

All Authority

When Jesus was talking about the authority, he was also referencing Daniel 7:14.
Daniel 7:13–14 NASB95
13 “I kept looking in the night visions, And behold, with the clouds of heaven One like a Son of Man was coming, And He came up to the Ancient of Days And was presented before Him. 14 “And to Him was given dominion, Glory and a kingdom, That all the peoples, nations and men of every language Might serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion Which will not pass away; And His kingdom is one Which will not be destroyed.
This is interesting: Adam was given dominion over the earth in Genesis.
Because of Adam’s sin, he relinquished his crown to satan, who became the god of this world.
But God gave a promise in his judgment on the serpent (satan) in Genesis 3:15
Genesis 3:15 NASB95
15 And I will put enmity Between you and the woman, And between your seed and her seed; He shall bruise you on the head, And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
The promise that was prophesied in Daniel and the promise that declared fulfilled here in Matthew.
The world’s good vs. God’s best.
Luke 4:5–7 NASB95
5 And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 “Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.”
Because of Jesus’s obedience to the father, he received what satan had promised him and so much more.
Jesus was not a hypocrite when he said :
Matthew 6:19–21 NASB95
19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 “But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys, and where thieves do not break in or steal; 21 for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Go

Because Jesus has been given authority, he gives us a three part instruction. Make disciples, baptise, and teach.

Make disciples

A follower or student of a teacher, leader or philosopher.
In Jewish culture, the student would select the teacher. A jew that was going to study in the ways of religion would select his teacher, Rabbi, and then follow and learn from them.
Jesus turned that around in that he selected his followers.
If Jesus hadn’t told Peter to follow him, do you think Peter would have sought out Jesus? Probably not.
People are not going to come knock on you door and beg you to share Jesus with them. You have to seek them out. You have to GO seek them.
It is your responsibility to make disciples.
We have this misconception in the Church today that your job is to invite someone to church and it’s my job to get them saved. That is not what it taught in scripture.
You have to share the Good news of Jesus with the unbelieving.
Share Jesus without fear
Roman road
T4T
The most powerful way to share Jesus is your testimony of what He did for, in and through you.
Live action:
In the past several years, Disney has taken many of their animated movies and remade them into live action movies.
Lion King
Alladin
Beauty and the beast
The Jungle Book.
They took what was an animated story and put real people in them. And while some don’t think they are as good as the original, there is something cool about seeing these cartoon movies come to life.
That is the affect of sharing your testimony.
It is humbling.
You are sharing your failures and your need for a savior.
It is quick
It doesn’t have to be your whole life story.
3 to 5 minutes.
It is real
There are people that can directly relate to your life.
They can see themselves in your story.
It is personal
You always have it with you.
Do you have a testimony?

Making disciples, not just converts

Jesus’ disciples followed him for three years every day of their life. What makes us think we can share a few verses, lead them in a prayer and our work is complete?
It’s not.
It is only the beginning. It you fathered a child and then said, “well, my work here is done,” you would be a deadbeat dad.
Don’t be a deadbeat disciple maker.
If you want to make disciples like Jesus made disciples, you have to do life together. You have to open up you life, you wallet, your home. You have to love them like you love your children. As a matter of fact, you as a parent, are called to make you children disciples.
It is messy, and exhausting, and possibly the most rewarding thing you can every do. I have a list of people that have poured into me
If you don’t have your own spiritual children, adopt. Seek out a new believer and pour into to them.
Your job of discipling isn’t done, until the disciple you made is making disciples.

Baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.

You are making disciples of something. There are people that watch you, do the things you do, will believe the things you believe.
Influencer is a person with a strong online presence. Most are ordinary people. They will push products. To someone, you are an influencer.
Jesus said to baptize them in the name of the Father, son and the Holy Spirit. That is not just a formula, but the subject of what you are to disciple people in.
Baptize: doesn’t save you. Identifies with Christ.
Name: singular.
Son: identified himself as an object of worship.
Baptism on the right side of your salvation.
Re-baptized. I don’t see any prohibition in scripture, but there is not a need. The picture of this is found with Jesus washing the disciples feet.
Peter head and hands also.
He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean and you are clean.....

Teaching

Matthew 28:20 NASB95
20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
Teaching is more than just educating.
Teaching them to observe. Education plus application.
observe- obey.
Jesus said those who love me obey me.
As James said, be doers of the Word, not just hearers of the Word.
That means as a disciple maker, you have to be obedient to Christ and all that he commanded.
Sermon on the mount, week after next.
I think that it’s important if we are to teach people to observe (obey) all that He commanded, we need to know all that he commanded, and the sermon on the mount is a great place to start.

The Promise

And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
Am with you: not will be.
Jesus’ promise is our comfort. We are not alone. David found that comfort in Psalms 139 which in part.
Psalm 139:1–12 NASB95
1 O Lord, You have searched me and known me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up; You understand my thought from afar. 3 You scrutinize my path and my lying down, And are intimately acquainted with all my ways. 4 Even before there is a word on my tongue, Behold, O Lord, You know it all. 5 You have enclosed me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; It is too high, I cannot attain to it. 7 Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? 8 If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. 9 If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea, 10 Even there Your hand will lead me, And Your right hand will lay hold of me. 11 If I say, “Surely the darkness will overwhelm me, And the light around me will be night,” 12 Even the darkness is not dark to You, And the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.
Share what God did for you.
Seek out someone to disciple.
Baptize.
For the discipled. If you don’t have someone pouring into you. I encourage you to seek out a mature believer.
If you are not a follow of Christ, commit to him now.
