Two Commands - One Response
Command given at the beginning of Jesus’ Ministry
Command given at the end of Jesus’ Ministry
Both commands demand a response
Come and Follow
Come and Follow
Jesus calling His disciples
16 Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” 18 And immediately they left their nets and followed him. 19 And going on a little farther, he saw James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, who were in their boat mending the nets. 20 And immediately he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants and followed him.
What is the command?
Come and follow
What is the response?
Immediate
Leave everything
Left all they knew:
Their trade
Their families
Their homes
The Lord called they responded
What were they called to?
A Call to Die
A Call to Die
To follow Christ is not a life of wealth and abundance
Matthew 8 - Foxes have holes, birds have nests, Son of Man no place to lay His head
33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.
Dying to self
Dying to sin
Possibly a physical death (in the disciples case this was true)
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ
Christ says, “Come Follow...”
- call to die to self
- call to something greater than anything this world offers
- We get God!
Go and Tell
Go and Tell
Second Command:
15 And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.
18 And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
What is the charge?
Go and tell the Gospel, make disciples
Gospel = Good News
News to be good it invades dark spaces

1 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. 4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
Gospel:
Sinners separated from God
Christ gives His life in our place
Gain new life in Christ
Restored relationship to the Father
STOP
Read Mark 1:16-20
The first command Jesus gives is to come and follow, what are some false reasons someone would follow Jesus?
What promises does Jesus make about following Him? (use other scriptures for support)
Read Luke 17:33 & Galatians 2:20
Why is dying a theme of the Gospel? (Jesus dying in our place; We die to self/sin, etc.)
What have you had to “die to” due to your relationship with Christ? Was it worth it? why or why not?
Read Matthew 28:18-20
The final command from Christ is to go and tell about the Gospel, why is this important? How has your life changed from the impact of the Gospel?
What complications have you faced sharing the Gospel? What did you do when you faced these obstacles?
