Genesis 1:1–31 NKJV

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day. Then God said, “Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.” Thus God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. So the evening and the morning were the second day. Then God said, “Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear”; and it was so. And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters He called Seas. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb that yields seed, and the fruit tree that yields fruit according to its kind, whose seed is in itself, on the earth”; and it was so. And the earth brought forth grass, the herb that yields seed according to its kind, and the tree that yields fruit, whose seed is in itself according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the third day. Then God said, “Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so. Then God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night. He made the stars also. God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. So the evening and the morning were the fourth day. Then God said, “Let the waters abound with an abundance of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the face of the firmament of the heavens.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that moves, with which the waters abounded, according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. And God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.” So the evening and the morning were the fifth day. Then God said, “Let the earth bring forth the living creature according to its kind: cattle and creeping thing and beast of the earth, each according to its kind”; and it was so. And God made the beast of the earth according to its kind, cattle according to its kind, and everything that creeps on the earth according to its kind. And God saw that it was good. Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

Started study of Genesis Chapter One

(5-4-2020)

I. Observations in vss. 1-2 (Beginning and Subscription of Creation)

Vs. 1 - In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth (subscription of creation)

Vs. 2 - The earth is without form and void (note: what does the phrase “without form and void mean?” Look up the words “form” and “void”)

Vs. 2 - Darkness was upon the face of the deep (note: what is the “deep” here? It seems to be speaking about the ocean? Look up the word “deep”)

Vs. 2 - The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters (note: (1) The Spirit here is the Holy Spirit. (2) The waters are probably a synonym for the word “deep” found in verse 1)

I. Observations in vss. 3-5 (First Day)

Vs. 3 - “Then God said” (1st time phrase is found)

Vs. 3 - God said, “Let there be light” (God creates the light)

Vs. 4 - God saw that the light was good

Vs. 4 - God divided the light from the darkness

Vs. 5 - God called the light day, and the darkness he called night

Vs. 5 - “The evening and the morning were the first day”(1st time phrase is found)

II. Observations in vss. 6-10 (Second Day)

Vs. 6 - “Then God said” (2nd time phrase is found)

Vss. 6, 7 - God divides the waters from the firmament which leaves some above and below the firmament

Vs. 7 - “And it was so” (1st time phrase is found)

Vs. 8 - God called the firmament heaven

Vs. 8 - “The evening and the morning were the second day”(2nd time phrase is found)

Vs. 9 - “Then God said” (3rd time phrase is used)

Vs. 9 - God commanded the waters to be gathered into one place and for the dry land to appear

Vs. 9 - “And it was so” (2nd time phrase is found)

Vs. 10 - “And God saw that it was good” (1st time phrase is found)

III. Observations in vss. 11-13 (Third Day)

Vs. 11 - “Then God said” (4th time phrase is found)

Vs. 11 - God establishes the grass, herb, and trees

Vs. 11 - The herb and trees have seed in themselves

Vs. 11 - “And it was so” (3rd time phrase is found)

Vss. 11, 12 - the phrase, “according to its kind” is found three times in these verses

Vs. 12 - “And God saw that it was good” (2nd time phrase is found)

Vs. 13 - “The evening and the morning were the third day”(3rd time phrase is found)

IV. Observations in vss. 14-19 (Fourth Day)

Vs. 14 - “Then God said” (5th time phrase is found)

Vss. 14, 15 - God creates the sun and moon to be for signs and seasons. for days and years (note: God creates a time pattern for humans to live by)

Vs. 15 - “And it was so” (4th time phrase is found)

Vs. 14-15, 17 - The sun and moon are for the purpose of giving light on the earth

Vs. 16 - God creates the sun as the greater light to rule by day

Vs. 16 - God creates the moon as the lesser light to rule by night

Vs. 16 - God creates the stars (note: Psalms 147:4 states, “He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name”)

Vs. 18 - “And God saw that it was good” (3rd time phrase is found)

Vs. 19 - “The evening and the morning were the fourth day”(4th time phrase is found)

V. Observations in vss. 20-23 (Fifth Day)

Vs. 20 - “Then God said” (6th time phrase is found)

Vss. 20, 21 - God creates fish, birds, and great sea creatures (note: the words abundance & great are used in these verses for the first time in the chapter)

Vs. 21 - “And God saw that it was good” (4th time phrase is found)

Vs. 22 - God blessed the fish in the ocean and the birds to multiply and fill the earth (note: the word blessed is used in this verse for the first time in the chapter)

Vs. 23 - “The evening and the morning were the fifth day"(5th time phrase is found)

VI. Observations in vss. 24-31 (Sixth Day)

Vs. 24 - “Then God said” (7th time phrase is found)

Vs. 24 - God creates living creatures upon the earth: cattle, creeping thing, and beast of the earth

Vs. 24 - “And it was so” (5th time phrase is found)

Vs. 25 - The word for beast in this verse is different for the word beast in vs. 24 (note: verify if this is true or not)

Vs. 25 - “And God saw that it was good” (5th time phrase is found)

Vs. 26 - “Then God said” (8th time phrase is found)

Vss. 26 - God states, “Let us make man in Our image and Our likeness (note: the plural pronoun ‘our’ is used twice by God in relation to making man in His image. This denotes two instead of one, but God is one.

Vs. 26 - God commands mankind to have dominion over all the seas and earth

Mankind is to have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, over the cattle, and over all the earth, and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.

Vs. 27 - God creates man in His own image and He creates them male and female (note: the singular pronoun is used this time in reference to God which denotes one)

Vs. 28 - God commands the male and female to be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth and subdue it.

Vs. 28 - God reiterates (cf. vs. 26) for mankind to have dominion over all the seas and earth

Mankind is to have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth (note: in this verse the phrases found in verses 26, “over the cattle” and “over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth,” are not found. Instead, the phrase, “over every living thing that moves on the earth” is found)

Vs. 29 - “And God said” (1st time phrase is found)

Vs. 29 - God gives mankind “every tree whose fruit yields seed for food”

Vs. 30 - God gives to every beast, bird, and creeping thing upon the earth “every green herb for food”

Vs. 30 - “And it was so” (6th time phrase is found)

Vs. 31 - “It is very good” (1st time phrase is found)

Vs. 31 - “The evening and the morning were the sixth day” (6th time phrase is found)

VII. Miscellaneous Observations on Genesis Chapter 1

God is already existing in the beginning (this implies Eternalness/Everlastingness)

God is speaking (this implies that God is the Originator of Language[s])

God is creating (this implies Sovereignty)

God is provides for His creation (this implies Providence)

God is naming what he creates (this implies Authority and Ownership)

God is creating according to its kind (this implies Order)
