1 For I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf and for those who are at Laodicea, and for all those who have not personally seen my face,
I’m really quite moved by this verse. it actually says a lot about Paul and how much he Love the people of Colosse.
“I want you to know how great a struggle I have on your behalf.”
it also points to what he is saying or what he is about to say is of great importance.
2 that their hearts may be encouraged, having been knit together in love, and attaining to all the wealth that comes from the full assurance of understanding, resulting in a true knowledge of God’s mystery, that is, Christ Himself,
Whats important?
6 Things Paul desires for them
THat their hearts be encouraged or comforted.
why is it important that they are encouraged?
2. They be knit together in love
The church would experience unity
3. Have full assurance and knoweledge or understnding.
why is this important
4. acknowledge the mystery of God the Father
5. Acknowledge the mystery of God the Son
26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations, but has now been manifested to His saints,
27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
16 By common confession, great is the mystery of godliness: He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations, Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.
3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.
In whom, who is the whom? Christ...
In christ is hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge
why in Christ..
44 Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me.”
why are these trusure hidden, or secret?
11 And He was saying to them, “To you has been given the mystery of the kingdom of God, but those who are outside get everything in parables,
29 “The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our sons forever, that we may observe all the words of this law.
in these mysteries of the gospel are hid all the treasure of wisdom and knowledge
4 I say this so that no one will delude you with persuasive argument.
This is the reason he wants them and us to know the mysteries.
this is why he contended so hard.
4 Now this I say lest anyone should deceive you with persuasive words.
He doesnt want them deceived by persuasive words
he wants them to know the truth for themselves
5 For even though I am absent in body, nevertheless I am with you in spirit, rejoicing to see your good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.
This is what Paul wants for them.....
good discipline and the stability of your faith in Christ.
6 Therefore as you have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him,
7 having been firmly rooted and now being built up in Him and established in your faith, just as you were instructed, and overflowing with gratitude.
verse 7 is what has been done for us
verse is what we must do....
Walk in Him
You have recieved Christ, you are a new creation, WALK IN HIM
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.
Again the warning about false teachers and teaching..
The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary Philosophy
Referring most obviously to the classical Greek schools of thought and their investigation of nature and truth,
The Anchor Yale Bible Dictionary Philosophy
a philosophy according to human tradition and the elements of the world, and not according to Christ
9 For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form,
Paul specifically attacks a false teaching
10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority;
The same Jesus thats the fulllness of the Godhead can make you complete…
again, he is ahead.. he is the first place HES NUMBER ONE
11 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ;
Not a physcial circumcsion but one of the heart
25 For indeed circumcision is of value if you practice the Law; but if you are a transgressor of the Law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.
26 So if the uncircumcised man keeps the requirements of the Law, will not his uncircumcision be regarded as circumcision?
27 And he who is physically uncircumcised, if he keeps the Law, will he not judge you who though having the letter of the Law and circumcision are a transgressor of the Law?
28 For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh.
29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
God is looking for “circumcision of the heart, by the spirit, not the letter.”
The cutting away of our flesh..
12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
he talks first of circumcision now baptism....
13 When you were dead in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He made you alive together with Him, having forgiven us all our transgressions,
