17 As He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and knelt before Him, and asked Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”
18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone.
I told this story last week
One day C.H. Surgeon was walking through the English countryside with a friend. As they strolled along, the evangelist noticed a barn with a weather vane on its roof. At the top of the vane were these words: “God is GOOD.” Spurgeon remarked to his companion that he though this was a rather inappropriate place for such a message. “Weather vane are changeable,” he said, “but God’s Goodness is constant.”
“I don’t agree with you about those words, Charles,” replied his friend. “You misunderstood the meaning. That sign is indication a truth: Regardless of which way the wind blows, God is love.
Surgeon says at one time
“’Lord, Thou hast been our dwelling place throughout all generations.’ The Christian knows no change with regard to God. He may be rich today and poor tomorrow; he may be sickly today and well tomorrow; he may be in happiness today, tomorrow he may be distressed; but there is no change with regard to his relationship to God. If He loved me yesterday He loves me today. I am neither better nor worse in God than I ever was. Let prospects be blighted, let hopes be blasted, let joy be withered, let mildews destroy everything, I have lost nothing of what I have in God.”
Here we see in our text the a certain rich young man coming to Jesus to ask him for something.
He rich but at the same time he is needy.
Let me know that money can not complete a man.
He calls Jesus good teacher. He as some knowledge or he has heard about the working and ministry of Jesus
He understands inheritance because he is rich but he does not ask for money but for eternal life. Because he knows this man has some kind of insight.
Adam clark notes 5 things about this young man.
1. He came running, (Mark 10:17 ), for he was deeply convinced of the importance of his business, and seriously determined to seek so as to find.
2. He kneeled, or caught him by the knees, thus evidencing his humility, and addressing himself only to mercy. See Matthew 17:14 .
3. He came in the spirit of a disciple, or scholar, desiring to be taught a matter of the utmost importance to him—Good teacher.
4. He came in the spirit of obedience; he had worked hard to no purpose, and he is still willing to work, provided he can have a prospect of succeeding—What good thing shall I do?
5. His question was the most interesting and important that any soul can ask of God—How shall I be saved?
Good Teacher..
Richard Strauss writes,
“‘Good Teacher’—that was an unusual form of address. In all of Jewish religious literature, no rabbi was ever called good. Only God and His law were considered to be good. Was this a case of empty flattery, or had this young man become convinced of something that the rest of the religious establishment had refused to admit—that Jesus Christ was actually God in flesh?”
Jesus is Goodness in the flesh.
He is walking mercy.
And we beheld Him the only begotten of the father FULL of grace and truth.
Why do you call me ? is the question from JEsus. What do you know about me?
What is Good about me?
No who is Good but God.
Richard Strauss also adds
“His comment was not a denial of His deity, as some have suggested, but rather an opportunity for the rich young ruler to confess his faith in Christ’s divine person. That confession never came, indicating the man’s lack of spiritual understanding. But Christ’s statement tells us something about God that we need to consider if we ever hope to know Him intimately. God is good, and beyond that, He is the only one who can rightfully be called good.”
My mother asked a question in our family chat
“Is a person a good person because they do good all the time?”
my response was,
“The answer is NO. David said in psalms 53 “there is none who does good.”
This is Actually specific to the atheist or the unbeliever. David actually calls them “fools.”
He says in Psalms 14 “14 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, they do abominable deeds; there is none who does good.”
Paul’s quotes this in Romans 3 when he says, “as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;no one understands; no one seeks for God. All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.” Paul leads us to understand it’s not just the atheists, but NONE of us are good.
Last Sunday we talked from Psalms 16 Where David said,
“I said to the LORD, “You are my Lord; I have no good besides You.”” Psalms 16:2
God is our goodness and He is good. He is the source and defines what good and goodness are and without Him, there is no goodness at all. None of us are good outside of Him and His grace. He is the source of our goodness”
THen i started to think,
I tell people they are “good” all the time. If good is , kind. But if good by biblical definition is righteous, there is none righteous, no not one.
The rich young ruler come to Jesus and calls him “Good teacher.”
In that age “good” was only reversed for God. Meaning they didn’t call anyone good, only God.
So when he said, “good teacher.” He would have never said that to another rabbi or just a rabbi.
He know he was speaking to the Son of God. Maybe, I say that to say, we need to be more precise with our speech.
There is a children’s story called, “There is no such thing as dragon,” It’s very interesting. You might have read it, I never did. There’s this little boy, Billie Bixbee. One day a dragon the size of a kitten was in his room, it was a small dragon. He went down stairs to tell his mother she responded, “there’s no such thing as dragons.” This is the theme of the story. Both Billy and his mom ignored the dragon, of course because, “there’s no such thing as dragons.” The dragon grow and grow, so big that it filled the house. The dragon ran down the street chasing a bread truck. Taking the whole house with him, “like a shell 🐚 on a snail 🐌.” The dad comes home to find his house missing. When he finds it he climb over the dragon into the house. He sees his family and he asks, “how did this happen?” Billy said, “it was the dragon.” Mamma says, “there’s no such thing...” Billy stopped her and said, “there is a dragon!🐉 a very big dragon“ the dragon wagged it tail happily and return to kitten size again. The mother then asked, “why did it have to grow so big?” BIlly response was quite wise, “I think it wanted to be noticed.” Ive been thinking of this story the last couple of days. Lies like dragon are NOT real, but often appear to seek attention. When the desire is not met. They grows and grows and grows till they consumes and control everything. Small lies turn into BIG lies. One philosopher says, “chaos emerges in a house, BIT BY BIT. Unconfronted and ignored. The question becomes, what will you do about the dragons in your life? Will you fear them? will you enjoy them? will you ignore them? Will you make excuses for why they exist? Or will you Conquer them? Beware of the little dragon, THEY WILL GROW UP! They have to be dealt with through the cooperation of the maiden and the King.
DON’T LET THE DEVIL RIDE!!!!
20 Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
Stand up, speak the truth, be precise… Tell the truth.
Fight off chaos, because it will come in like Noah’s flood.
drowning everything. there’s no ark because no one built on, even though everyone felt the storm gather.
“don’t ever underestimate the destructive powers of the sin of omission.”
The young ruler got the first part down.
He ran
He knelt
He inquired
And he acknowledged
I know you are GOOD. And you’re a teacher so TEACH ME!
Teach me what money cant buy
Teach me what education cant learn
Teach me whats Good
Teach me how to bridle my tongue
Teach me the way i should respond to you
Teach me to pray
Teach me to not respond out of my emotion of fear.
You not just Good when things are going my way.
God is GOOD, ALL THE TIME, AND ALL THE TIME, GOD IS GOOD
(CLOSE)
The problem with this rich young man is not how he starts, but he totally misses it.
God did’t want his stuff.
Because if you keep reading he would have gotten it all back 100 fold what he lost.
29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake,
30 but that he will receive a hundred times as much now in the present age, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions; and in the age to come, eternal life.
Jesus wanted him
He wanted him to empty himself out and let the king of glory come in with all his power and goodness.
Jesus says
19 “You know the commandments, ‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’ ”
20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept all these things from my youth up.”
He says yeah I got all the works down.
So im good right? I been real good?
21 Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, “One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
its not about what you do. Its about who I am in you.
come, take up the cross, and follow Me.”
Ill teach ya..
22 But at these words he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.
