Old Testament Roots

The LOH really derives from the OT and especially the psalter throughout the daily prayers.
Notice Christ’s vocalizing of the Psalms (cf. Psalm 22 on the Cross)
Also, notice Christ’s recollection of “all of Scripture” as a way of pointing to himself (Luke 24:27)

“The mirror for the soul...”

The psalter finds words that express the human condition - even Christ uses the psalms as an expression of his inner turmoil.

The Prayer of the whole Church

The LOH/daily office is not always “for me” - rather, it is the prayer of the whole Church.
The number of times I have felt detached from the particular prayers or psalms.
Praying the hours brings us away from a self-centeredness and isolation
The need for reunion today

Songs of Reorientation

Cf. Bruggemann
The daily office offers a way of reorientation amidst a time of disorientation - as well, the psalms offer a necessary disorienting that occurs when we are improperly oriented)
