Intro:

AG: Here are some things mom taught us:
a Mothers teach us about FORESIGHT: Make sure you wear clean underwear in case you’re in an accident.
b LOGIC: If you fall out of a tree and break your neck, don’t come crying to me.
c RELIGION: You better pray that comes out of the carpet.
d TIME TRAVEL: If you don’t straighten up I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week.
e GENETICS: You’re just like your father.
f CONTRADICTIONS: Shut your mouth and eat your dinner.
g CONTORTIONS: Will you look at the dirt on the back of your neck?
h CIRCLE OF LIFE: I brought you into this world and I’ll take you out of it.
TS: In the Scripture the family is the heart of society. God created Adam and Eve and made the two become one. As He gave the Law, He included family as the heart of everything. One of the most critical instructions to families is found in Deut 6:4-9
Deuteronomy 6:4–9 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
The ultimate responsibility for teaching and training the children about spiritual things is Daddy, but both Mom and Dad work together as one to accomplish God’s purpose in the home. Let’s be honest, Momma’s influence is immeasurable.
RS: We need a return to God’s purpose for the family. It begins by applying this Scripture. If we as parents fail to instruct our children in the wisdom of the world, all other instruction is in vain.

First, Teach them there is One God

Deuteronomy 6:4 ESV
“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
The basic foundation of all other wisdom: There is one and only One God.
In the time this was written, the world thought of everything as having a divine cause.
Many societies had gods and goddesses of sky, sun, moon, harvest, fertility, light, darkness, thunder, rain, death
People saw the world and its wonders and recognized there must something bigger, something greater than just what could be seen.
Paul expressed this idea in Romans
Romans 1:18–25 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things. Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.
We must teach our children that God is the one and only God.
God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, three in one.
His attributes:
all-powerful
all-knowing
He is everywhere
He is just
He is truth
He IS love
We all must learn that all of us need the love and grace of God to deal with our sin problem.
He demonstrated that:
John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
We must teach our children, all the children in our lives, that God loves them so much He sacrificed Himself to pay for our sins.

Second, Teach them to Love God

Deuteronomy 6:5 ESV
You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.
Our children must learn to love God.
It is more than just knowing He is there.
They must learn that He wants a relationship with them and they are here to love Him

Worship

Love-
Love is at the heart of worshipping and serving God
To adore Him
To praise Him
Can you sense the love and adoration the Psalmist has for God in Ps 8
Psalm 8 ESV
To the choirmaster: according to The Gittith. A Psalm of David. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. Out of the mouth of babies and infants, you have established strength because of your foes, to still the enemy and the avenger. When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him? Yet you have made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. You have given him dominion over the works of your hands; you have put all things under his feet, all sheep and oxen, and also the beasts of the field, the birds of the heavens, and the fish of the sea, whatever passes along the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
We worship out of an overflow of love

Serve God

We also Serve out of love
Jesus said, John 14:15
John 14:15 ESV
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.
Love leads us to serve Him
We obey His commandments.

Third, Teach them the Scriptures

Deuteronomy 6:6–9 ESV
And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
Our homes should be schools of life
The Bible is not merely history and commands of do’s and don’ts
The Bible is a book of wisdom.
It teaches us how to walk in a manner which please God.
Proverbs 1:1–6 ESV
The proverbs of Solomon, son of David, king of Israel: To know wisdom and instruction, to understand words of insight, to receive instruction in wise dealing, in righteousness, justice, and equity; to give prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the youth— Let the wise hear and increase in learning, and the one who understands obtain guidance, to understand a proverb and a saying, the words of the wise and their riddles.
Every moment of every day we have a mission from God to teach the Scriptures.
Live them out- lead and teach by example
when you give tithes, explain why from the Scripture
When you bring them with you to worship, remind them of why we assemble.
Talk about them
regularly read and discuss the Bible.
Bring it into everyday conversations
Point out how God’s word speaks to the situations in which you find yourselves.
Study them.
Teach the Scriptures and teach our children to study them for themselves.
In teaching the Word to our children, we set them up for the best life possible.
Think of life lessons we try to instill into our children “for their own good.”
To share
To clean up after themselves
Respect themselves and others
Tell the truth
Work hard
All of them are important, but Biblical wisdom is a greater need than them all

Conclusion:

Thank you mothers for your faithfulness to teach your children that there is One God, to Love Him, and to Know His word.
