Mothers Day 2020 Where did they go?
Taco Bell- I really like Taco Bell -I realize its not real Mexican food but I’m pretty sure McDonalds doesn’t have real hamburgers either
One thing about Taco Bell that is discouraging is how often they change the menu -They have new items and then they are gone -Where did they go?
Today Id like for us to look briefly at Titus 2:1-10 in hopes we all get a glimpse at what faithful believers because we end up asking the church the same question, “Where did they go?”
Paul always taught and maintained the necessity of of a good name and reputation of the local church in society
Paul speaks to the character of multiple groups of people in this passage of Scripture
-in this Titus has just been instructed to lead the church well and guard them from false teachers
1. Faithful pastors
Vs 1- But as for you- Paul speak to Titus directly
-Titus is the one to whom this letter is written to -only 3 letters addressed directly- Timothy, Titus, Philemon
-The teaching role is imperative for the pastor -It should be one of his top priorities not so much his social media account
But more so he should teach sound doctrine -Many people tell great stories with little Scripture and leave people coming back for more but never fed -Many have all the knowledge in the world but yet can’t get it out in ways for people to understand but leave people unfed
Titus is commanded to teach sound doctrine- Stay away from the false teachings
-Dont let the surrounding culture persuade you
Im reminded of Gods Command for Joshua
Joshua 1:8–9 ESV
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
This kicks me in teeth as much as anyone
Gods instruction for Joshua to be successful was to have sound doctrine and that comes from a healthy diet of Gods word
With that comes the assurance that we should not be afraid but rest knowing God is with us
Pastors need that, churches need that- Thats what sound doctrine does
It may not be popular but it is eternally profitable
Where did these guys go?
-world is full of motivational speaker but little Biblical preaching
2. Faithful Older men
Titus 2:2 ESV
Older men are to be sober-minded, dignified, self-controlled, sound in faith, in love, and in steadfastness.
Sober minded- not easily influenced, distracted, or clouded judgement
Dignified- these men tend to have a quality worth admiring about them
-they typically are cautious when they speak but when they speak it is carefully thought through
Self Controlled- these are well balanced individuals
-they exhibit restraint and discipline in life
-they have been tested throughout their life and have rejected sin and are known for their self control
Sound in faith- they have a solid grasp of Gods word
-Core truth is understood and being applied in daily lifes
Sound in love- the distinguishing marks of the faithful older man is his love for others
John 13:34–35 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Sound in Steadfastness- he is not easily swayed
-Life will bring may different scenarios but he remains firm in his faith
Luke 6:46–49 ESV
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”
Where are these men at?
-Church is full of respected business men but men like these are dwindling
3. Faithful “29” and holding women
Titus 2:3 ESV
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good,
-what we see is that they are to be just like the older men in behavior but with a couple key points illuminated
Reverent in Behavior- they should be setting the example for faithful God fearing women
Like the Prov 31 women- that doesnt come overnight or naturally ladies
-Its not just because your good homemaker
-Its from faithfully living your life after God
-By the grace of the God your going to grow old but that wont make you Godly
-Its a choice
I this would be on par with dignified from the mens section
Not slanders- the lips are dangerous
-Godly women are called to control them and older women should be setting that example for the younger.
-34 times the NT uses this word- diablos- same name attributed to Satan- false accuser or slanderer
Not slaves to much wine- these ladies are to be sober minded
-Above influence and should run from anything that would cloud their judgement and stain their life
-Many in Crete had fallen in this way and ruined their testimony, tainted the church and led others astray
Why is all this necessary
Titus 2:3–4 ESV
Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,
So they can teach the younger girls and ladies what is good
Where are these faithful older women at?
We have younger girls, ladies and mothers that need to be loving directed and taught
There are just some thing that older lady can say loving to another lady that a man cant do
The Church needs you
4.Faithful Younger women
Titus 2:4 ESV
and so train the young women to love their husbands and children,
-this is a work in progress ladies but it is work and valuable work at that
Love your husbands and families
-A young wife and mothers primary job is the care and tending to her family
-Supporting and loving her husband and watching over their children
-We live in a society that likes to take the value of this role away from women and pushes women to do x, y or z at the neglect of Gods creative work and plan for a wife and mother
-The womens liberation movement didnt begin with in the 20th century but began in the Garden of Eden when Eve chose to sin and go against Gods plan
-God has made women in an absolutely glorious way and made both and woman to work together in complementary way
-Moms/Wives one of the primary ways you glorify God is faithfully loving your husband and watching over your children
Concerning children
1 Timothy 2:15 ESV
Yet she will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith and love and holiness, with self-control.
Liftin says,
A woman will find her greatest satisfaction and meaning in life, not in seeking the male role, but in fulfilling God’s design for her as wife and mother with all “faith, love, and holiness with propriety
-God doesn’t view that as miniscule but rather a God ordained purpose
Titus 2:5 ESV
to be self-controlled, pure, working at home, kind, and submissive to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be reviled.
Self controlled- applies to everyone- its a fruit of the Spirit
Pure- the life is to be lived striving for holiness but also set apart for her husband
-they 1 Tim 2:9-10 will say that women should dress modestly not seeking to draw other people affection and attention
Working at home- again another primary job of a mother is a homemaker
-that involves a multitude of different tasks- I dont know how you do it
-Never a complaint- just a consistent working
-Doenst mean women cant work to provide for their family
-Even Proverb 31- has her working and selling her goods for profit but mamas are to diligent to the tending of their homes and family
-this isnt saying that a mother cant have a life outside the home
-It is reiterating the integral God commanded role women are to have the home
-That not belittling- thats God honoring- not popular in todays culture but absolutely truth for us today
Submissive to their own husbands
-Very key point- “own” husbands
-Wives you relationship to your husband is very different to every other male
-He is to lead and you are to support
-Gen 2, 3, Ephesians 5 will all support this
This doesnt mean that you are a doormat or have no voice
-My wife is often a voice of reason and perspective I dont see
-However she does so while still being submissive and God honoring
Why is all this important- look at the end of that verse?
that the word of God will not be reviled
Where are these faithful younger ladies at?
Just because your married or have children doesnt make you a faithful God fearing women
-Its work- hard work- but it is necessary
5. Faithful younger men
Titus 2:6 ESV
Likewise, urge the younger men to be self-controlled.
-Self control- who would have thought
-Anger, envy, pride, lust, the list an go on
-Society says live it up but the Scripture says live for Him
Titus 2:7 ESV
Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity,
-Model of good works
-Wives, when husbands do this well it is easy to be submissive because you know they have your best interest at heart
-Men are to be model for the family and the church
-they should genuinely reflect their transforming heart
But also if they are to teach- they should do it seriously and sincerely
-Its should be proceeded with caution and deliberate attention
MacArthur said no matter how great his doctrine is and how well he teaches, if he doesnt practice it he is a hypocrite
-For married men that starts in the home- leading spiritually
-For single men that begins in the home- with you!! you wont all the sudden figure it out when you get married
-Faithful men follow Jesus now
-However its hard at times to find men that will teach all the SS classes and will let someone else do it
Titus 2:8 ESV
and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
The point behind this verse is for younger men to be known for sound day to day speech
-No matter where he goes he is consistent- life marked by holiness of speech
-Men, this is a struggle- coarse speech, bad jokes and profanity shouldnt be among us
-Hard to be above reproach when we put ourself in the hole
So that no one can say anything about us- no claim can be validated- but all put down
We will stop here for time sake but I want us to look at the end of verse 8
“having nothing evil to say about us”- people outside the church often judge those associated with the church by the conduct of those who claim to apart of the church
Our actions, our speech, our social media accounts, our public witness either validates the message of Christ at Antioch Baptist church or discredits it
When I came to this passage for today I honestly didnt think about the fact that have walked through the necessity of not making any stumble and handling sin for a month now
But its amazing how Gods word just keeps saying the same truths as if we always needs to hear them again and again
We need faithful pastors
-Teaching sound doctrine
We need faithful older men setting the example of godliness for the church to follow
We need more faithful seasoned women- who have made God their aim for many years and are living Godly lives thus teaching the younger ladies how to walk faithfully
We need more faithful younger ladies- embracing the God ordained and magnificent ways God has made you
-Loving their husband and children well and seeking godliness
We need More faithful younger men
-we care more about Gods name than their 401ks
-Who desire to model godliness for their families and their church
Why?
Vs 5- so that word of God may not be reviled
Vs 8- nothing evil to say about us our the church that Christ bought with his own blood
