Are You a Disciple of Jesus? – Part 1
Three Elements Are Required for True Discipleship:
1. Placing God’s Truth into My Head – LEARNING – Pedagogy
2. Putting God’s Truth into My Actions – LIVING – Practice
3. Prioritizing God’s Truth in My Choices – LEAVING – Priorities
The First Element of Discipleship: LEARNING
1. The Root ______________________ of Discipleship
The root word for the Greek word translated “disciple” is μανθάνω,
(manthano) which is translated as the verb “to learn.”
2. Being a Disciple Requires that You Are ________________________.
Matt 11:29 "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle
and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and
offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them.
Phil 4:9 The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in
me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.
Phil 4:11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever
state I am, to be content:
1 Tim 5:4 But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them first
learn to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for this is good
and acceptable before God.
2 Tim 3:14 But you must continue in the things which you have learned
and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
3. Being a Disciple Requires Being _______________ by God’s Teachers
Matt 28:19-20a “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations,
baptizing them …, 20 teaching them…”
Eph 4:11-14 And He Himself gave some [to be] apostles, some prophets,
some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of
the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13
till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of
God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of
Christ; 14 that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and
carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the
cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,
Col 2:6-7 6 As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in
Him, 7 rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you
have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.

The Second Element of Discipleship: LIVING
1. Learning Must Lead to Living (Putting to _______________________)
Matt 28:19-20b "Go therefore and make disciples … 20 "teaching them to
observe all things that I have commanded you”
Matt 10:24-25a “A disciple is not above [his] teacher, nor a servant above
his master. It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a
servant like his master.”
Eph 4:16-24 actions expected of taught believers
Titus 3:14 And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to [meet]
urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful.
1 Pet 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us,
leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps
2. Our Claims Are Validated by Our __________________________
1 John 2:6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as
He walked.
3. The Term “_________________” Is Related to Living Out God’s Truth
Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it
was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a
great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in
Antioch.
• As the church – believers – were being taught, they earned the term of
“Christian.” They were living like “little Christs,” and the surrounding
community labeled them because of how their behavior mimicked the
teachings of Jesus. This is a beautiful picture of what discipleship is
meant to be. We learn God’s truths to live out God’s truths. It changes
the way we live to the point that it is evident to the unbelievers around
us that we live by supernatural means.
4. The Term “______________” Replaces the Label “Disciple” After Acts
• NOUN: “disciple” (mathetes) occurs 261x in the Gospels & Acts.
• VERB: “to disciple” (matheteuo) occurs 4x in the NT.
• What is interesting that after the book of Acts, the term is not used
again throughout the remainder of the New Testament.
• “Saints” seems to be the term that takes over. The plural form shows
up 60 times in the NKJ, and 55 of those occur after Acts. The term
“saints” relates both to a believer’s holy position in Christ at salvation,
and also the expectation of living out that holiness in action.
• 1 Pet 1:13-16 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind…; 14 as obedient
children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, [as] in your
ignorance; 15 but as He who called you [is] holy, you also be holy in all
[your] conduct, 16 because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."
