WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM?
The question that Jesus poses to the disciples might be the most important question that we will ever answer. You see the answer that we come up with determines the extent of our faithfulness. the answer to that question determines if we we will follow Jesus and to what lengths we will follow. It determines level of our obedience. Our answer to that question determines if we want to follow him or not?
are we willing to deny ourselves?
Are willing to take up our cross and follow him?
Are we willing to loose our life for Jesus and the gospel?
Are we willing to give up the whole world or forfeit our soul?
Are we ashamed of Jesus and His words?
Within the answer to that question rest the entirety of faith and Christian walk with Jesus. What kind of disciple we will are and what kind of disciple we will be is wrapped up in who Jesus is to us?
Is Jesus Lord?
Is Jesus Savior?
Is Jesus King?
Is Jesus the master teacher?
Is Jesus all Powerful?
Is Jesus God?
If there is one ting that certain, it is that when you come face to face with Jesus in the pages of Mark’s Gospel is that you forced to way the evidence of who jesus Jesus is. You cannot stay neutral. You cannot put off answering that question. You are forced to answer? to not answer the question or to avoid it let’s you know where you are as a disciple and the extent to which you will follow Jesus.
WHAT DOES THE GOSPEL OF MARK SHOW US CONCERNING WHO JESUS IS?
from the beginning of the Gospel of Mark to the end of Mark Mark guided by the H.S. paint s a very clear and pointed picture of who Jesus is.
In fact in this Gospel You can see that within the first 3 chapters Jesus presence and actions are forcing the people decided for themselves who jesus is. Every teaching, every act of power causes the people to wrestle with the question who is Jesus?
We can see this as we look at 3 questions that are scattered in the first 7 chapters of Mark
CH. 1:27 “what is this?”
CH. 2:7 “Why does this man speak this way…?”
CH. 4:41 “Who then is this?”
They were all amazed, so that they debated among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”
after Jesus cast out the demon the crowds ask this question. they had just seen dispayed before their very eyes and ears the power of Jesus. He was able to cast out the demon.
“Why does this man speak that way? He is blaspheming; who can forgive sins but God alone?”
This occurs right after jesus heals the paralytic who was lowered through the roof. Jesus had said, “Son you sins are forgiven”.
They realized how significant the words of Jesus were. If he can forgive sins he must be God and that was too much for them to grasp and understand.
They became very much afraid and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
the disciples after fearing for their life and seeing Jesus calm the storm with His words they are left to answer the question set before is this morning. Who is Jesus?
Within the 1st 3 Ch. Mark gives us a thorough picture of Jesus character and nature.
Jesus is the Master Teacher (1:21-27)
He taught in all sorts of arenas like the synagogue (1:21)
He taught as one having authority (1:11-16)
Taught that which was new (1:27)
Some of those were unfriendly. He taught few, He taught many, He taught on the roadside, in a boat, on a hill, in the cities out of the cities, the poor, the rich, the outcast.
not only what he taught was important but the way he taught was. He taught with authority . he commanded the demon to come out and it did.
Jesus truly is the Master Teacher. Is he your master Teacher?
Jesus the Miracle Worker (1:23-3:6)
Power over spirit world: demons (1:23-26)
Power over internal illness: Peter’s mother-in-law (1:29-31)
Power over all (1:32-34)
Power over external illness: (leprosy - 1:40-45; hand - 2:1)
Power over internal illness: paralysis (2:1-12)
Is Jesus the all powerful miracle worker to you
Jesus the Leader (1:16-20; 2:13-14; 3:13-19)
he selected His disciples “those whom He Himself wanted” (3:13)
He narrowed the group to twelve and gave them instructions as well as authority
The question is whether or not he is your leader. Is he in command and leading your life? Are you listening and following what He says and doing what he says?
Is Jesus your all powerful Leader and teacher? or not?
You want to know something very interesting in the Gospel of Mark. As the people wrestle with who Jesus is there are some that know exactly who Jesus is and they are the demons.
Demons Know Who Jesus Is!
1:24 “I know who you are - the Holy One of God!”
3:11 “whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, “you are the Son of God!””
5:7 the demon bowed down before Him, and shouting with a loud voice, he said, “What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I implore You by God, do not torment me!”
The demons are contrasted with the people? We often wrestle with who Jesus is but the demons a certain of who Jesus. I think this point us to the fact that it is not enough just to know who Jesus is.
When we answer the question who Jesus is, that has to lead to an active working faith. If it doesn’t then we are no better than the demons. We have faith or belief that demons have. If that doesn’t shake you to your core I don’t know what will.
But someone may well say, “You have faith and I have works; show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.”
You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder.
But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?
Once we find out who Jesus is. Once you determine who jesus is to you after examine the evidence it has to lead to an active working faith.
Who is Jesus to you and does it compel you to be a real dispiple?
And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
“For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
