What Does Jesus Pray For?
We tend to be selfish in our prayers
We like to pray for miracles
Because it takes away a personal responsibility to help
We like to pray for healing
Usually we pray for someone else, so it’s unselfish, right?
We pray for material things.
Jesus prays God would be glorified, that he will fulfill the mission he and God the Father has given, and that the mission will be continued through his disciples.

Jesus speaks directly to God the Father
An example to us: Put God First on our prayer list.
Jesus knows the time: The Cross is next.
He prays for His Father to complete what he cannot:
Glorify your Son = Sacrifice your Son and release him to the Cross
He prays the He will be able to fulfil His part
Jesus wants to glorify the Father in his actions

since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

The Cross is needed so that sins can be forgiven
Eternal life will be given.
Life eternal is based on Knowing God and believing Jesus Christ as His ambassador
Jesus takes on the title of “Messiah” as he faces the Cross

I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

Jesus did what He came to do:
He showed the love of God to the world.
He showed the power of God over any sickness or disability
Jesus reminded all of the authority of God over the worship of his Name
Now Jesus prays to return to his rightful place in heaven

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you.

Jesus knows any who came to him were drawn by the Father: the people you gave me.
As disciples of Jesus, we are called “out of the world”
Jesus knows God first has ownership over us
Jesus knows His Disciples are a gift from God for the work in the world.
Disciples keep God’s word
Disciples know that Jesus is Messiah, son of God, son of Man, full of the power of heaven because it comes from God

For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me.

Disciples hear and receive the word of God through Jesus
Disciples know fully the Jesus is the Son of God
Disciples believe that the whole mission is from God.

I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

He prays for the witness of His disciples in the world
The work of God will continue in the world
It will continue through His disciples
It will continue as His Disciples know Whose they are.

Not release from trouble
Not escape from his enemies
Not a limit on his own suffering
Nor any other selfish thing
He prays God be glorified.
He prays Eternal Life be given.
He prays the mission he began will continue
He prays for us, His Disciples, to continue the work.
