Luke presents Jesus as a great prophet by means of literary and geographical allusions to the ministries of Elijah and Elisha.
• All three prophets resurrected an only son: Elijah at Zarephath, Elisha at Shunem, and Jesus at Nain.
• The miracles performed by Jesus and Elisha were performed on the slopes of the same hill—a connection Jesus’ audience was sure to make.
• The parallel miracles and locations of these events strengthen Luke’s presentation of Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel’s prophetic expectations.
Christ never preached a funeral sermon. When meeting the dead, He gave them life. He came to give life (John 10:10; 11:25–26). He who has Christ, has life. Without Christ, man is dead in his sins (Eph. 2:1). He gives enjoyable life, but also eternal life.
