The Holy Spirit Baptism Part 2
The Holy Spirit Baptism Part 2
Well, last week we discussed the relationship of the Old Testament believers to the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit, how is the ministry of the Holy Spirit seen in the life of the Lord Jesus, is the baptism of the Holy Spirit “a scriptural Term”. and What is the relationship of Christ to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.
So tonight we are going to start out we a question. “What is the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, or What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
I want to go back to our talk about Is the baptism of the Holy Spirit “a scriptural Term”?
Let’s establish our perspective.
First, The Pentecostal and Charismatic sees the baptism of infilling of the Holy Spirit as an experience different to a person being saved.
Be saved is going through a process of surrendering the complete person into the guidance and indwelling of The Holy Spirit.
We agree that the Holy Spirit is operating in every believer.
But still every believer must answer the question of Acts 19:2.
Act 19:2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed?
Act 19:3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
Act 19:4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
Act 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Let’s look at this for a minutes:
Since ye believed:
That is telling us that they are saved:
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
John 3:6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.
But then Apostle Paul asked Have you received the Holy Ghost?
And they said they have not heard of the Holy Ghost.
Apostle Paul said then what were you baptized to and they said that they were baptized to John baptism.
John baptism was to repentance so mean they were saved, this showing a second experience in the Holy Ghost.
Act 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
Now this is what I want to touch on tonight:
The baptism of the Holy Ghost is not:
discussion time: What do you think the baptism of the Holy Ghost is and is not?
a. Where you mind goes blank.
b. a self-hypnotic or trancelike state.
Let’s understand that the mind is active worshipping Jesus Christ, the Baptizer with the Holy Spirit..
John 1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.
Jesus is the baptizer!!
The emotions are warmed as the love of God is poured forth into our hearts.
Rom 5:5 And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love.
Our physical body participates as worship is spoken and expressed with upraised voice in prayer.
Act 4:24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is:
Also we find upraised hands of adoration.
Psalm 63:4 Thus will I bless thee while I live: I will lift up my hands in thy name.
Psalm 63:5 My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness; and my mouth shall praise thee with joyful lips:
Now I want you to notice the tongues:
Act 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
There a two fold function of the gift of tongues. Now we are talking about those who are baptism in the Holy Spirit.
The Word of God describes two basic functions of tongues:
a. Personal edification
b. Public exhortation
When you received the baptism in the Holy Spirit, tongues functions as a sign of the Holy Spirit’s presence.
Jesus prophesied it as a sign.
Mark 16:17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Paul refer to it as a sign:
1 Cor 14:22 Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe.
Peter deals with it:
Act 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
Act 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Act 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
Peter talk about how this is also for the gentiles:
Act 11:16 Then I thought of the Lord's words when He said, 'John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
Act 11:17 And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift He gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God's way?"
Discussion time:
So what do you think is the initial evidence of receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
In every case where we have people experiencing the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, we find a common denominator, there was an immediate evidence of speaking in tongues.
Discussion time:
What is the Baptism in the Holy Spirit?
It is the promise of the Father.
Act 1:4 Once when He was eating with them, He commanded them, "Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift He promised, as I told you before.
Act 1:5 John baptized with water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
It is the enduring with power to do the commands of Christ.
Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be My witnesses, telling people about Me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
It is a definite experience of which we can know that we have or have not received.
Act 19:2 "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" he asked them. "No," they replied, "we haven't even heard that there is a Holy Spirit."
It is an operation of the Spirit distinct from and separate from the conversion experience.
Act 8:12 But now the people believed Philip's message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. As a result, many men and women were baptized.
Act 8:15 As soon as they arrived, they prayed for these new believers to receive the Holy Spirit.
Act 8:16 The Holy Spirit had not yet come upon any of them, for they had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
It is something to be experienced as part of the Christian foundation.
Act 2:38 Peter replied, "Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Act 2:39 This promise is to you, and to your children, and even to the Gentiles—all who have been called by the Lord our God."
So we are going to stop there and come back to this for part 3
