Nothing makes me crazier than a bad kid...
“He won’t let us go out...”
Bigger, smarter and faster
Bratty kids turns, “You’re not the boss of me!”
If I set you on the porch and lock the door...
You couldn’t feed, clothe, or cross street
It’s built in to not want to obey authority
We all want to stick it to the man!
I want to go 55 in a 50
I want to put grass clippings in the recycle bin
I want to ride my bike through the drive-thru
If I’m honest...
I want to shake hands with 11 people in my house without masks on
But what does the bible say about that?
YouVersion: You’re not the boss of me
We’re in 1 Peter 2:13-25
13 Be subject for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, 14 or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good.
Notice Peter starts with “for the Lord’s sake”
If have the name Christian, we represent the Lord
For all of today’s lesson, we can take OUR desires out of it
What we learn today is not to please:
Yourself, the governor, the media or your Facebook friends
It’s for the Lord’s sake!
What do we do?
Subject ourselves to every human institution
From the President to Congress to governors to mayors...
Why would you want to listen to those schmucks?!
1 Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God.
No one has authority in this world unless God gives it to them
If God didn’t want Pritzker in charge, he wouldn’t be!
But he is, and God wants us, as the church, to be obedient
Why?
15 For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.
Pastor Gerald Glenn kept holding church services after COVID
Died from Corona-virus
Twitter comments:
Stupid is as stupid does
you can't not enjoy the ironic sense of humor karma works in.
History has proven time and time again that the religious virus is far more deadly than any other virus.
Proving yet again that it is far safer having a belief in science rather than a belief in God.
The world is waiting for moments like that
Every one of those tweets is ignorant and foolish...
Bishop Glenn said some wonderful things in his sermon...
But refusing to submit gave opportunity to twist
By subjecting ourselves to authority, we don’t give them an opportunity
16 Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. 17 Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
Christ has set us free from sin
Also from this world, because we have hope in eternity
In reading those tweets, I was tempted to respond
I can go toe to toe with most in an argument
Ask my family
I enjoy the process of testing information to prove a truth claim
I would love to bash those tweeters in the name of evangelism
It’s about defending the faith!
No, it’s a desire to sin...
To defend my Christian position and win by making them look stupid
That’s not using my freedom for love, it’s using it to cover-up evil
You might be thinking, NO! WE HAVE TO PROTECT OURSELVES! OUR GOD!
Check this out:
18 Servants, be subject to your masters with all respect, not only to the good and gentle but also to the unjust. 19 For this is a gracious thing, when, mindful of God, one endures sorrows while suffering unjustly. 20 For what credit is it if, when you sin and are beaten for it, you endure? But if when you do good and suffer for it you endure, this is a gracious thing in the sight of God.
God’s order to be subjected to authority, does not end at injustice
That’s hard to accept
MLK said, “The time is always right to do what is right.”
If it’s right, it doesn’t matter that there are other circumstances we don’t like
Right now, many in church don’t like that we can’t meet
Government should have no say, government is lying, it’s a conspiracy
I’ve tried to find the viva la revolucion passage, but can’t!
I will say this, there is a line in Scripture
You do not obey man before God
Obey man’s orders if consistent with God, and you strive for peace
18 So they called them and charged them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered them, “Whether it is right in the sight of God to listen to you rather than to God, you must judge, 20 for we cannot but speak of what we have seen and heard.”
This encapsulates everything
First, Peter and John are clear they will obey God
They also acknowledge the authority of the Jewish rulers
We’re going to keep speaking, and whatever you decide we’ll go with
You might be thinking then, what about today?
Shouldn’t we gather and if fined or jailed we accept it?
Ye..NO!
Ask ourselves, is it a sin to not gather?
24 And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, 25 not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
First, “neglecting” is Egkataleipo (Eng-cat-uh-lay-poe)
Means to totally abandon or utterly forsaken
Second, “habit” is Ethos (Eh-thoss)
Means the custom or instituted rite
This passage is saying don’t totally abandon gathering together which is the instituted rite of some...
Some people made it standard practice to eliminate gathering altogether
Is that our situation? No… Our situation is more like Jesus’ in Mark 2
Explain Jesus walking on Sabbath...
Disciples plucking grain - Not lawful on the Sabbath!
Jesus:
First of all, David ate the showbread he wasn’t supposed to eat… why?
27 And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
I strongly believe we could substitute the word “gathering” for “Sabbath”
Gathering was made for man, not man for gathering
Why do we gather? Cuz God gets mad if we don’t?
No, because it’s good for us! For training, edification, for community!
What happens when those things become a temporary danger to us?
G. Campbell Morgan: “Any application of the Sabbath Law which operates to the detriment of man is out of harmony with God’s purpose.”
It’s okay to skip gather for a short time for the betterment of people
When things are normal, 10 inches of snow could cancel church!
If you’re puking your guts out, it’s okay to stay home!
If you’re on vacation and miss a Sunday, you won’t be struck by lightning!
Now, if COVID-19 is spreading, it’s okay to do church online for a bit too
For 2 reasons:
To protect ourselves from the virus
More importantly, to subject ourselves to the governing authority
Even if we feel it’s not justified
Here’s more proof:
21 For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps.
We’re following Christ’s example
Do I even have to ask, “When did He ever subject Himself to authority when it wasn’t justified?”
Here we go, Peter tells us:
22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 25 For you were straying like sheep, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.
Jesus example is far beyond what we’re experience
Likely more than we’ll ever experience...
He has the power to bring fire down from heaven and consume everyone!
Instead, it says, “(He) continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly.”
We are the sinful, Jesus was pure
He came to save us, and we murdered Him
Where’s the justice in that?! There is none
So why do we feel entitled to it?
If we live in light of eternity, earthly authority doesn’t mean much
Especially because they only have authority from God!
I have to ask a serious question...
I have heard a ton of criticism about the govt.
How much time have you put into watching documentaries, reading articles or sharing memes?
Bailey isn’t defending churches, Pritzker’s isn’t obeying his own orders, Trump wants to drink bleach...
Let me ask you this:
How much time have you invested in that…?
And how much time have you invested in praying for our leaders?
Have you even prayed for Pritzker one time? Fauci? Kahl?
If you’re fighting but not praying… you’re the problem
I was convicted this week because, I’ve been part of that problem too...
You may feel the need to defend, but you’re straying away from what God wants
Trust me, God can handle Himself!
Let Him worry about the universe, you worry about being a good citizen
More importantly, a good follower of Christ
Let’s take a moment now, to pray for our government...
Prayer
Prayer
Stay home, wash your hands, and just put on the stupid mask
With that, have a great week and God bless
