Where is our peace?
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
These are the things we are supposed to dwell upon as a church collectively, but it applies to the individual as well here.
That which is true.
The opposite of truth would be falsehood or lies.
We have to be dwelling upon the truth.
(Friend the other day- What can we even trust anymore?)
Whatever is honorable.
Its the word for revered. Respectful things.
Whatever is righteous.
The wrong is strong in the world. There is so much wrong to dwell upon, its imperative now more than ever to dwell on that which is right.
Whatever is pure.
Holy thinking. Dwelling on that which is pure rather than that which is defiled. This is tough in a fallen world.
Whatever is lovely.
That which calls forth love.
Whatever is of good repute.
That which is of good repute. Praise Worthy is another translation.
If there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. Consider these things. think on.
I like the word dwell because it implies living there.
It means thinking rightly.
Holy thinking.
God is concerned with our thoughts and intentions.
How and what we think about is evident of where our heart are.
So we have to ask ourselves:
What are we allowing to speak to our hearts? What are we listening to?
Media? News, Movies, Radio, Podcasts, Preaching.
We must run it through through the filter
Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
If not, why are we wasting our time and poisoning our mind.
Also, we must be careful of what we are saying to our selves.
No one is more influential in your life than you are, because no one talks to you as much as you talk to yourself.
People laugh at that statement, but I'm really quite serious. You're in an unending, incredibly important conversation with your soul every moment of every day.
You interpret, organize, and analyze what's going on inside and outside of you. You talk to yourself about the past, you talk to yourself about the future, and you talk to yourself about what you're experiencing in the present.
We must guard our minds.
Allow our minds to be shaped by the Word of God.
For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
We must renew our minds daily.
Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.
Once our minds and hearts are right, it doesn’t stop there.
The things you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Then we are to practice them.
