Good morning and welcome to LW’s livestream service. We are glad you are able to tune in with us.
25 My soul clings to the dust;
give me life according to your word!
That word ‘soul’ in the Hebrew means throat, breath, or living being.
It is an image of the soul is one that comes directly from Genesis 2:7
7 then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Genesis 2:7 shows us that the life and breath of man - that is his soul… comes from the life and breath of God.
So, when the psalmist says that his soul clings to the dust…
He is saying in effect that his life and breath, that he has recieved from God… is filled with dust.
If you’ve ever breathed in dust… you likely have experienced the discomfort, and even choking effect that dust has on the lungs...
but dust being brought into our lungs is not only uncomfortable, you see, it is deadly.
Thus the second echo from Genesis this verse time from chapter Gen 3:19
19 By the sweat of your face
you shall eat bread,
till you return to the ground,
for out of it you were taken;
for you are dust,
and to dust you shall return.”
So when the psalmist says that his soul (his breath) clings to the dust… he is poetically saying that he is experiencing the effect of the curse that sin has brought - namely that the breath of man, that has been given by God is being removed as he returns to dust - or to sum it up, the psalmist is experiencing the effect of sin, that is which is ultimately death.
This is a common experience that every one of us knows.
If you have ever felt down or blue - your soul clings to the dust
If you have ever experienced anxiety - your soul clings to the dust
If you have been frustrated by your toil and work - your soul clings to the dust
if you have been sick - your soul clings to the dust...
And if your soul clings to the dust… then your soul needs the breath of God and this is what the psalmist asks God for
25 My soul clings to the dust;
give me life according to your word!
It is the word of God that has been breathed out by God
It is the word of God that contains the breath of God
It is through the word of God that God breaths life into our soul that clings to the dust…
For in that word, we have recieved a special revelation of God
And this is the reason that we gather each week, to hear the word of God preached so that our soul might be renewed with life from God.
And it is this revelation of God that has been revealed in the word that is summarized in the Apostle’s Creed.
Just as we do every week, please recite the Apostle’s Creed with me?
I believe in God the Father Almighty
Maker of Heaven and Earth
And in Jesus Christ
His only Son out Lord
Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit
Born of the Virgin Mary
Suffered under Pontius Pilate
Was crucified, dead, and buried,
The third day he arose again from the dead
He ascended into Heaven
And is seated on the right hand of God the Father Almighty
From there He shall come to judge
The living and the dead
I believe in the Holy Spirit
The holy universal church
The communion of saints
The forgiveness of sins
The resurrection of the body
And the life everlasting
Amen
Let’s pray
You have the word of eternal life
