Prayer for the Disciples

John 17:9 ESV
I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours.

Prayer for the Disciples

A prayer of consecration
Jesus first consecrated himself to God and the Mission - John 17:1-5
Now Jesus prays that His disciples be consecrated
Not a general prayer; not for all of humanity
Consecration to God can’t happen for an unbeliever.
Jesus prays for those who have believed
When we believe Jesus Christ is the Sent Son of God — John 17:8
We are lining up with the heart and will of God; we are His.
Jesus doesn’t take from the Father—He receives

A New Relationship Roadmap

The World is Loved by God (John 3:16-17)
Everyone is covered by the Father’s love
The relationship is unilateral —
God loves us but we don’t love God
We selfishly love ourselves until we believe
Those You gave Me—
Those who believe in Jesus are His
A new relationship begins: we love Jesus, so—
The Father gave us to Jesus to become transformed
The love relationship between Jesus and the Father means
Mine are Yours — now the relationship is responsive
We are always recipients of the Father’s love,
Now we know God as “Abba” Father; “Daddy”
Yours are Mine — we truly know God’s love through Jesus
Now the relationship is complete;
God is glorified when we believe in Jesus
We are responding to the gift of God’s heart for us John 3:16
Jesus is glorified in his believers as the Son of God
Believers get the reward: eternal life through Jesus.

Released to God’s Keeping

John 17:11 ESV
And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one.

Released to God’s Keeping

We continue in the world
Jesus is with the Father
The Father can be trusted to keep us
“Keep…in your name”
It is the family name of God
We are gathered into the Family of God
If we take the name, we can be conjoined with Christ
Just as Jesus and the Father
Like asking God to open his arms wide
to gather us into his embrace.

In Need of God’s Keeping

John 17:12 ESV
While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled.

In Need of God’s Keeping

Jesus knows the world he leave behind will change
The daily real presence of Jesus is the key
Living in Jesus is living in the Family of God
Jesus has been the guardian of His disciples
Because we need protection from the world’s temptations
Judas gave in to worldly temptatons
All those whose stayed with Jesus, in Jesus,
He kept us in the Father’s name
The reason we are guarded by Christ is because we need it

All for Joy

John 17:13 ESV
But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

All for Joy

Love surrounds us
Love keeps us
Love infuses us with God’s joy.
