Luke 18:19 ESV
And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.
Jesus is the standard of what God considers good.

Beware the Church of the Good People

They don’t meet as a congregational group
Their doctrine is pretty much relative
They have a universal understanding that their goodness will get them in to heaven (if the even think about heaven or hell)
Quick to point out the one verse that they’ve memorize Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judge

Don’t Replace the External Moral Code with an “Inner-self” Code

Let’s examine this man’s life
Luke 18:20–21 ESV
You know the commandments: ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’ ” And he said, “All these I have kept from my youth.”
God’s definition of Good
Luke 18:22 ESV
When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”
Luke 18:23 ESV
But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.
In Contrast, let’s look at a better example of a good man
Acts 10:1–2 ESV
At Caesarea there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian Cohort, a devout man who feared God with all his household, gave alms generously to the people, and prayed continually to God.
Slam-dunk right, this man is set
Acts 10:47–48 ESV
“Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
Acts 2:5 ESV
Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven.
Acts 2:37–38 ESV
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
There are other examples

DON’T LET YOUR SELF-PRESCRIBED GOODNESS GET IN THE WAY OF GOD’S DIVINE RIGHTEOUSNESS

The breastplate of righteousness in Eph 6:14 is not something your forged and fashioned yourself for spiritual warfare. It was given you by the Grace and Mercy of God
Romans 3:10 ESV
as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one;
Ephesians 1:7 ESV
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Hebrews 9:14 ESV
how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Romans 5:9 ESV
Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was stricken for the transgression of my people. He shall bear their iniquities. He bore the sin of many and makes intercession for the transgressors.

Truth is not the issue it’s the persons own desires that is the issue
