The Main Attraction - Jesus Is
5 Powerful commands!
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
dwell in the land and befriend faithfulness.
The New King James Version Psalms 37:3
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
Dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
Trust in the LORD, and do good:
instead of worrying and envying
David counseled the man or woman of God to simply trust God
And do good for His glory.
It is remarkable how quickly we can get distracted from the simple work of trusting God and doing good.
David also counseled the man or woman of God to leave aside worry and envy by simply enjoying the blessings God gives.
He provided Israel a land to enjoy, and His faithfulness was like food for them every day.
Enjoy the land / His faithfulness.
Delight yourself in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
to delight (take) v. — to take a high degree of pleasure or mental satisfaction in.
. This means to cheer one’s heart and mind by considering and by faith receiving the multiple blessings of God.
iDelight yourself: Several writers explain and apply this idea.
· “Expect all thy happiness from him, and seek it in him.” (Clarke)
· “It includes a deliberate redirection of one’s emotions…
- Coming to America Clip -
It’s through delighting in him that our Will will become impregnated with His word (Seed)
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
“If you abide” - The If clause / If you delight
The results we expect is based on a condition!
Very Important Question! What if God gave you what you desired (your will)?
Abide In Me!
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
What does it mean to Abide or remain:
Remaining in Jesus consists primarily in holding fast to his teaching (8:31) [BECNT].
To remain means ‘to live in fellowship with’, ‘to live in union with’, or ‘to remain united with’ [TH].
To remain or stay somewhere implies a continuing relationship, one that is already going on
Remaining involves more than believing in Jesus. It also consists of being united with him, sharing his thoughts, emotions, purposes, and power [IVP].
To remain means to adhere to Jesus as one’s vital source of help and strength [Rd].
It has to do with continual dependence and reliance on him, obedience to him.
His words abide in me - Remember his words are the seed / It impregnates are will....
It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.
What happens in your mind when His word is abiding in you? (Elder Timesa Johnson)
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Jesus said “ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.”
“Ask” is not a Christmas List!
“Ask” - God designed prayer to give the disciples the joy of bearing fruit while God himself gets the glory.
“The Ask” - Is connected to our prayer life!
Four things happen when we ask or pray correctly…
First - My request is granted, because my request is aligned with his Will. Remember our Will has been impregnated by His Word/Will
Second - The Father is glorified, that is, by your asking him for things and his giving them to you. He gets glory as the one who is rich and good enough to answer prayer.
(Biggy said, I love it when you call me big papa)
Third - The Father is glorified when We bear much fruit!
Prayer is for fruit-bearing.
Fourth - I prove to his disciple… - Evidence
Wait what does it mean to bear fruit!
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
Ambassadors - The King’s Priest
Bring forth fruit - That you should be rich in good works; faithful and successful in spreading my gospel.
You would expect the verse to be just the reverse: God will give you what you ask in order that you might have a fruit-bearing mission.
But Jesus says it the other way around: I give you a fruit-bearing mission in order that the Father might answer your prayers.
that ye should go and bring forth fruit; go first into Judea, and then into all the world; and brings forth the fruits of righteousness and holiness in themselves, and be the happy means of the conversion, and so of bringing in a large harvest of souls to Jesus Christ:
and that your fruit should remain;
