In all circumstances Take up
In all circumstances Take up
17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,
Imperative which is the same command of verse 14 when the command is to stand
the helmet and the sword are the last two pieces a soldier takes up
THE SWORD
THE SWORD
The only offensive weapon — the sword of the spirit refers to the source or the origin of the sword
The sword is given by the spirit of God
The believer needs this sword to combat the enemy’s assault
John chapter 8 tells us that satan is the father of lies
The bible describes its self in a few ways. Lets look at them
12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.
29 Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?
9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
The word used as a sword
The word used as a sword
1 Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” 4 But he answered, “It is written,
“ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ”
5 Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple 6 and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written,
“ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’
and
“ ‘On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ”
7 Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” 8 Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” 10 Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’ ”
11 Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.
Jesus quotes from the old testament
3 And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Satan responds with scripture
Must know the truth
1 “Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.
11 For he will command his angels concerning you
to guard you in all your ways.
12 On their hands they will bear you up,
lest you strike your foot against a stone.

Jesus responds again with the sword
16 “You shall not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.
The kingdoms belong to satan at this time
4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience—
Jesus once again resist temptation and stands firm against the devil with the sword
13 It is the Lord your God you shall fear. Him you shall serve and by his name you shall swear.
20 You shall fear the Lord your God. You shall serve him and hold fast to him, and by his name you shall swear.
Notice this too
Satan tempted eve by appealing to the physical appetite with the fruit
Jesus with bread
He tempted both Jesus and Eve with personal gain - you will not die - Jesus you wont hurt your foot
He appealed to them both with power and glory — to Eve you will be like God and to Jesus you will have the world’s Kingdoms
11 so that we would not be outwitted by Satan; for we are not ignorant of his designs.
Now the practical
Now the practical
16 Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.
Must commit to the storing up the word of God in your heart. This is a commitment to the truth you believe

Train to use the sword - offensive weapon many christians neglect
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. 5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, 6 being ready to punish every disobedience, when your obedience is complete.
