Because of the diverse range of perspectives that are attached to this book, I will do my best break this down as close to what is traditionally understood and believed about Genesis
Anatomy of Genesis
The Book of Genesis is the first book of the Old Testament
The title Genesis comes from the Greek word for origin, a name given to it by early Greek translators. The original Hebrew title is actually the very first word in the text, bereš’it, which means “In the beginning.”
Author: Traditionally, there is this guy named Moses who is attributed with writing Genesis, along with the other first five books of the Old Testament, which is actually known as the Pentateuch, which is a word that comes from the Greek, meaning a five-book work.
Date: Going with the traditional authorship of Moses, Genesis, along with the rest of the Pentateuch, would’ve been written somewhere between the 15th-13th century BC.
Purpose: So what Genesis has going on for itself is quite much.
Gives the origin of the universe, the earth, the plants, animals, and humanity.
It gives the beginnings of human institutions, professions, and crafts
It describes the origin of sin and death
So if you ever heard someone calling anyone a sinner, this is where that stems from
Illustrates the insidious working of Satan in human life
Relates the beginning of history with the announcement of a Redeemer who was to come
Gives a selective history of people and events as viewed from the perspective of the purposes of God.
Genesis is really the historical basis for God’s covenant with His people.
Gives the nation Israel an explanation of its existence on the threshold of the conquest of Canaan.
Can be broken down into four sections
