So tonight we enter again into the “Holy of Holies” of Isaiah as we see the plan of God for our salvation. It’s important that we understand the theology of our Salvation to really appreciate what is written and what Christ has done.
Why would God sacrifice His one and only Son? Many people cannot deal with this and turn away from God. Couldn’t God have just waved His hand and pronounced us clean?
God tells us that He is not as a man subject to change. He is the same yesterday today and forever. He is by nature Righteous and Just. Sin cannot approach Him and unfortunately our father Adam choose to Sin and passed that genetic defect on to all man-kind.
So God gave the Jews through Moses laws that if they could live by them they could be righteous. But they could not. All their sacrifices and offerings were at best just coverings that could not really take away their their sin.
So to deal with this problem, that seemingly had no solution, God choose to pay the penalty due for our sin by paying the penalty Himself by sending His Eternal Son to die a brutal death in our place.
21 For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
All sin, all unrighteousness, ever committed past, present, and future, was placed on Jesus Christ. This was God’s plan from the beginning and He over and over shows us in the OT that this was His purpose.
John writes in his conversation with Nicodemus;
13 No one has ascended to heaven but He who came down from heaven, that is, the Son of Man who is in heaven. 14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
18 “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
so let’s get into it:
1 Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?
2 For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
It is the HS that makes Jesus Christ attractive to us. When we consider the tabernacle in the wilderness we see a type of Christ. The boards and poles that held it up were wrapped in Gold. It was covered with Beautiful Linen with Purple and Blue designs. But all that beauty was covered, first with Goats hair, and then Rams skins, and finally Badger (Porpoise) skins. You could not apprciate the beauty until you went inside. Through the one and only door.
44 No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day.
3 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
When you meet Jesus and begin to appreciate who He really is these verses can be really painful even to read.
Jesus the creator of all there ever will be is despised. The Hebrew word here means to counted as vile, to be regarded with contempt. And not only that He is rejected by the ones He came to save.
He is a Man of sorrows - the Hebrew word indicates mental and physical pain. Acquainted with grief - carries the idea of sickness.
Think of all the suffering, sickness, and pain Jesus encountered every day.
I often have thought about how lonely Jesus must have felt as a human being. Totally misunderstood by even those closest to you. Many of us have felt that pain. Jesus understands and asks you to bring it to Him.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
It interesting to me how we have a propensity to hide our faces from things that make us uncomfortable. We are no different than Adam and Eve, hiding in the presence of God.
We we read we did not esteem Him it carries the idea of accounting or valuing. Jesus was not valued by His own people.
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.
4 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
IOW - truly He has lifted away our diseases and sicknesses; and burdened Himself with our mental and physical pain.
If you are able to grasp this, Jesus came to make us whole, mentally and physically. What a savior.
Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted.
Stricken means beaten or touched, Smitten carries the idea of scourging, even killing. The difficult realization here is that it was God who ultimately did this. As parents and grand parents this is far beyond what we can comprehend.
5 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
But He was wounded - means to pollute or desecrate. Jesus was desecrated because of our Sins, yours and mine. He was He was bruised for our iniquities; bruised - carries the idea of crushing or breaking in pieces. Why would God do this? Because that is the penalty due for our transgressions and iniquities.
Transgressions means rebellion, we have willfully not obeyed, and iniquities means perversity and depravity.
Even from the beginning;
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
Chastisement - means discipline or correction. Why? so that we could have peace with God.
His stripes - indicate the black and blue bruising and wounds from the scourge.
Healed is the Hebrew word rapha'. You my have heard of Jehovah Rapha - God our healer.
All this detail give new light to for God so loved the world!
6 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
Notice - We all, that’s everyone. Sheep need a shepherd as they tend to got lost.
1 The fool has said in his heart, “There is no God.”
They are corrupt,
They have done abominable works,
There is none who does good.
2 The Lord looks down from heaven upon the children of men,
To see if there are any who understand, who seek God.
3 They have all turned aside,
They have together become corrupt;
There is none who does good,
No, not one.
You see the theme here, all our depravity and rebellion was laid upon Him. That all of the sin of the world forever, past present and future.
7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
Oppressed here indicates heavy pressure. Imagine if you can the pressure Jesus was feeling. Yet He was quiet in the process.
BTW - Sheep are silent while being sheared generally because they since comfort from the shearer.
The gospels tell us that as Jesus was being accused before the Sanhedrin,
60 but found none. Even though many false witnesses came forward, they found none. But at last two false witnesses came forward 61 and said, “This fellow said, ‘I am able to destroy the temple of God and to build it in three days.’ ”
62 And the high priest arose and said to Him, “Do You answer nothing? What is it these men testify against You?” 63 But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered and said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!”
8 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
This not only refers to the confinement of the Messiah before His crucifixion, but it also speaks of the fact that the Messiah died childless. There was no one to declare His generation.
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
“The phrase ‘cut off’ strongly suggests not only a violent, premature death but also the just judgment of God, not simply the oppressive judgment of men.” (Grogan)
Compare this to Daniel;
26 “And after the sixty-two weeks
Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself;
And the people of the prince who is to come
Shall destroy the city and the sanctuary.
The end of it shall be with a flood,
And till the end of the war desolations are determined.
Cut off here in Daniel means to suffer the death penalty.
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
The substitutionary death is pounded into this chapter. Jesus was crucified because of our Sin.
18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive by the Spirit,
9 And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Jesus died in the company of the wicked, and it was the intention of those supervising His execution to cast Him into a common grave with the wicked.
Despite the intention of others to make His grave with the wicked, God allowed the Messiah to be with the rich at His death, buried in the tomb of the wealthy Joseph of Arimathea.
Again, the incredible detail of the HS regarding Jesus’ crucifixion.
BTW - we have a word in English; excruciating. Meaning intense, horrible pain. This comes from the idea of crucifixion, literally out of the cross.
10 Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
This is impossible for us to completely understand. It pleased Yahweh to literally crush Him. Why?, because the result would be our Salvation!
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in His hand.
Of course, we are His seed. Spiritual Seed.
11 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
He shall see the labor of His soul; labor means travail or pain. soul is the Hebrew word nephesh. It means that which breathes, the breathing substance or being, soul, the inner being of man. Really all that made Him human. In the end He is satisfied with His suffering as it justified many. Meaning it made many right with God. Just as if they had never sinned.
It says By His knowledge, that is the Gospel, Knowledge of Him, and trusting in Him Justifies us with God.
12 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
Jesus will ultimately rule over all in the end. And He will divide the spoil with those who are strong in him, You and me.
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.
Finally of course more detail regarding His Crucifixion, here referring to the thieves on His right and left.
39 Then one of the criminals who were hanged blasphemed Him, saying, “If You are the Christ, save Yourself and us.”
40 But the other, answering, rebuked him, saying, “Do you not even fear God, seeing you are under the same condemnation? 41 And we indeed justly, for we receive the due reward of our deeds; but this Man has done nothing wrong.” 42 Then he said to Jesus, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.”
43 And Jesus said to him, “Assuredly, I say to you, today you will be with Me in Paradise.”
Also, remember Jesus interceded not only for the thief but also for the Jews and the Romans crucifying Him by praying, “Father forgive them for they know not what they do.”
Well, its not hard to see why Isaiah is referred to as the 5th Gospel. Gods plan of redemption revealed through out the scriptures. And the exciting part is that you were included in that plan before the foundation of the earth.
We will close with this;
28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. 29 For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30 Moreover whom He predestined, these He also called; whom He called, these He also justified; and whom He justified, these He also glorified.
I pray to night that God has called you to be His. All that is required is that you believe in Him and trust Him with your life.
