Romans 6:1 CSB
What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply?
INTRO—
In chapter 6, Paul anticipates two questions resulting from the discussion of Adam/Sin/Death/Law & Jesus/Righteousness/Life/Grace in chapter 5.
The first one I have set before us through the title for today’s message: “Should we keep on sinning (sin even more) so that grace might multiply (increase)?” [Romans 6.1]
So, the statement on the title slide…the blank at the end of the specific message title…should that blank be filled with a period or a question mark (to denote “Seriously. Yes.” or “Seriously? No.”
The Scripture before us today, Romans 6.1-14, contains a ‘sorta definitive’ answer from Paul!
Nestle-Aland: Novum Testamentum Graece, 28th Auflage Chapter 6

μὴ γένοιτο

“God forbid!…Certainly not!…May it never be!…By no means!…Absolutely not!”
Clear & unequivocal. “This is the answer. Period.” I am thankful that God inspired Paul’s forthrightness and more. He doesn’t end it here. Paul essentially says, “Absolutely not!…because...”
BAPTIZED INTO CHRIST MEANS DEATH. [Romans 6.3-7]
[[Question: “How does a dead person respond to something?”]]
The picture of our baptism definitely resembles death— “buried with Him through baptism.” (Why is baptism so important? Obedience…& it helps solidify the definition of becoming a Christ-follower [Christian]).
Before =
Ephesians 2:1 CSB
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins
After =
Galatians 5:24 CSB
Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Galatians 6:14 CSB
But as for me, I will never boast about anything except the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. The world has been crucified to me through the cross, and I to the world.
“Mortify the flesh”…because this is ongoing. Death to sin is separation, not extinction. [the gift is not like the trespass…(?)].
2 Corinthians 5.17… “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ...the old has passed away...”
DEAD WITH JESUS MEANS ALIVE, TOO! [Romans 6.8-11]
The picture of our baptism certainly resembles life— “and raised to walk in newness of life.”
2 Timothy 2:11 CSB
This saying is trustworthy: For if we died with him, we will also live with him;
Colossians 3:3–4 CSB
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
“Alive to God”…each and every day. It’s ongoing!
2 Corinthians 5.17… “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation…see, the new has come!”
ALIVE WITH CHRIST MEANS WEAPONS FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS. [Romans 6.12-14]
Being alive, as our baptism pictures…alive for what?
1 Peter 2:24 CSB
He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree; so that, having died to sins, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.
Romans 12:1–2 CSB
Therefore, brothers and sisters, in view of the mercies of God, I urge you to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God; this is your true worship. Do not be conformed to this age, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may discern what is the good, pleasing, and perfect will of God.
CONCL—
Galatians 2:20 CSB
I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Romans 6:14 CSB
For sin will not rule over you, because you are not under the law but under grace.
Romans 5:21 CSB
so that, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace will reign through righteousness, resulting in eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
