SERIES INTRODUCTION
We are living in a world overrun by fear. The Corona virus dominates the news and has us locked away in our homes. Meanwhile with businesses closed or limited workers are being laid off or furloughed. People are afraid of getting sick, afraid of losing their job, afraid of losing their home. Where do we turn in the middle of this much fear?
RECAP PREVIOUS WEEKS IN SERIES
Starting principal:

You get to choose whether to empower faith or fear in your life

God tells us: “Fear Not...”
“I am with you “
“I care for you”
“I have overcome the world”
“I have defeated death”
What kind of faith should we have?
Last week we looked at EVEN IF faith.

“Even if” faith doesn’t require a specific outcome for obedience.

Today we are looking at the kind of faith that requires to take a risk in order to see God do something amazing in our lives. We are looking at

“Get Out of the Boat” Faith

EXPLORE
PRIMARY SCRIPTURE
Matthew 14:24–31 ESV
24 but the boat by this time was a long way from the land, beaten by the waves, for the wind was against them. 25 And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

MAIN IDEA
Transition from scripture to main idea

THE MAIN THING: If we are going to see the power of God at work in our lives, we have to be willing to leave the “safe” place and walk with Jesus.

Explore the Main Idea

1. God wants to do great things in your life

Share: What is something you are wanting God to do right now in your life?

John 14:12 ESV
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.

2. Our fear keeps us bound to places of safety and comfort

Matthew 14:26–28 ESV
26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, and said, “It is a ghost!” and they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” 28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”

3. The safe places really aren’t safe at all

Remember the boat and the sea we talked about a few weeks ago when we talked about peace.
Matthew 8:24–25 ESV
24 And behold, there arose a great storm on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by the waves; but he was asleep. 25 And they went and woke him, saying, “Save us, Lord; we are perishing.”
The boat isn’t safe it is being where Jesus is that is safe and dangerous at the same time.
The boat isn’t keeping you safe, it is killing you. Your safety and comfort is killing your faith.

4. Everything revolves around intimacy with Jesus

Matthew 14:28–29 ESV
28 And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.

Share: What is one word that would let you know it was Jesus speaking to you?

5. When you get out of the boat, even if you fail you will be saved

Matthew 14:30–31 ESV
30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”
