THE PERSONALITY OF THE HOLY GHOST
I am thankful that God has made us unique. That we are all different. It’s fascinating to know that nobody is the same.
Now others must think this is pretty fascinating to because a lot of people take different personality tests.
The most popular one is the Myers-Briggs personality test.
Lot’s of individuals and even employers have their candidates take these to see if they are the right fit for their company.
Myers-Briggs personality test is a theory of different types produced by Carl Jung.
It is based on 16 personality types, which Jung viewed as stereotypes.
They act as useful reference points to understand your unique personality At the heart of Myers Briggs theory are four preferences.
People and things
Facts and reality
Logic and truth
or values and relationships
Now I believe the scriptures can tell us what the personality of Holy Spirit is.
Let’s read it...
John 16:7–14 (KJV 1900)
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.
Now the Holy Ghost is not an energy or a forces but, it’s an actual person as is God the son and God the father.
It is the Holy Ghost who imparts the first germ of life, convincing us of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment to come.
And is it not the Holy Spirit who after that flame is kindled, still fans it with the breath of his mouth and keeps it alive?
"Holy Ghost" and "Holy Spirit" are English renderings of the same Ancient Greek phrase, and are intended to mean the same thing.
There was no particular point in time when everyone switched.
Rather, use of "Holy Ghost" has faded, and use of "Holy Spirit" has increased, since the beginning of the 20th century.
The reason for the change is that the English language changed, with "ghost" no longer being used the way it used to be.
But the change was delayed and slowed by the continued use of older Bible translations.
You will still see the term Holy Ghost used a lot in the King James Version.
Now the definition of ghost just 200 years ago and today are radically different.
200 years ago ghost would primarily mean “The seat of life or intelligence; the soul; to give up the ghost.
Now, today Ghost is primarily thought of as a dsembodied soul. The soul of a dead person that inhabits the earth in the the form of a shadow.
Tv and media has made this popular with shows the such as ghost hunter and movies such as ghostbuster.
I prefer to use the term Holy Ghost. It’s not something to be feared and we shouldn’t let our culture dictate what we say.
Only God himself should do that. Now the scriptures use the words Ghost and Spirit interchangably.
Now both definitions of Ghost that I shared earlier are present in the scriptures.
It’s just in the original meaning of scripture that our definition of ghost today was in the minority back then and vice versa today.
Now There are 7 characteristics of the personality of the Holy Ghost that I want to share with you today.
I. THE HOLY GHOST SAVES—John 3:5
John 3:5 (KJV 1900)
5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
A.He convicts man of his need of a Savior.
B.He convinces man of his need of a Savior.
C.He converts (changes) man. As man is in Christ, he is a new person (2 Cor. 5:17). This is brought about by the Holy Ghost.
II. THE HOLY GHOST SANCTIFIES—Romans 15:16
16 That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost.
We do the confessing; He does the cleansing.
A.He sanctifies through the Scriptures (Ps. 119:9, 11).
B.He sanctifies through surrender. As we surrender to Christ, His blood keeps cleansing us (1 John 1:7).
C.He sanctifies through separation. As we cooperate with the Holy Ghost, we will live a clean life (2 Cor. 7:1).
III. THE HOLY GHOST SEARCHES—1 Corinthians 2:10
10 But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
A.He searches man’s actions. He knows how we act.
B.He searches man’s ambitions. He knows our desires and plans.
C.He searches man’s affections. He knows of our love.
D.He searches man’s attitudes. He knows our thoughts and feelings.
Allow Him to search you and cleanse you daily.
IV. THE HOLY GHOST STRENGTHENS—Acts 1:8
8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.
A.Strength to follow. The Christian life may be hard to live, but the Spirit gives us strength as we pray.
B.Strength to fight. The Christian life is a battleground. With the help of the Spirit, and God-given tools we can be a success in the Christian life (Eph. 6:10–18).
C.Strength to fellowship. The Holy Spirit gives us strength to attend the house of God. It is important to attend church, because the Holy Spirit is there to quicken and strengthen us (Heb. 10:25).
V. THE HOLY GHOST SEALS—Ephesians 1:13
Ephesians 1:13 (KJV 1900)
13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
A.The Spirit owns our time. Give Him all your time.
B.The Spirit owns our talent. Use them for His honor.
C.The Spirit owns our tithes. Give your money to Him.
VI. THE HOLY GHOST SOOTHES—John 16:7
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
A.Comfort in sorrow. The Holy Ghost gives strength to accept God’s will.
B.Comfort in sickness. If you are not healed, be patient.
C.Comfort in separation. When losing a loved one, He comforts us.
VII. THE HOLY GHOST SIMPLIFIES—John 16:13
13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
A. He reveals the Scriptures to us and helps us understand them.
B. He reveals the Savior. He makes Jesus real to us.
God is looking for people who will be instruments in the hands of the Holy Ghost. As people yield to the Spirit, He takes them and works in them, making them effective workers for the Lord. God is not looking for intelligence or talent as much as He is looking for consecration. Learn to yield to Him.
