Exegetical Proposition: The ancient sage watches his words: Then/Exegetical
The Synonymous observation of the Israelite Sage to his disciple is that whatever he says to impact others will in fact fully impact him (18:20).
The primary observation is that words are born from internal desires.
The synonymous observation is that one’s words determines one’s fate.
The Synthetic observation of the Israelite Sage to his disciple is that effects of speech are a matter of life or death within community (18:21).
The primary observation is that the deadly tongue disrupts community and by its lethal power isolates its owner from community and kills him.
The antithetical observation is that the life-giving tongue creates community and by its vitality gives its possessor the full enjoyment of the abundant life within the community.
