Lest We Forget
1.) The REQUIREMENT of the Sacrament.
- 1 Cor. 11:24, “…do this”
- Communion is not optional for believers.
2.) The REASON for the Sacrament.
- 1 Cor. 11:26, “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.”
- These emblems are a concrete reminder of our faith.
- 1 Cor. 2:2, “…Jesus Christ and Him crucified.”
3.) The REMINDER of the Sacrament.
- 1 Cor. 11:24 & 25, “…do this in remembrance of me.”
- We find memorials all through the Scriptures: rainbows, circumcision, 12 stones from the Jordan river, etc
- Exodus 12:26-27, “And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them…”
- We have a responsibility of using communion as a way to explain and remind our children of what Christ did for us on the cross.
4.) The Covenantal RELATIONSHIP of the Sacrament.
- 1 Cor. 11:25, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood…”
- “Communion,” koinonia – “intimate fellowship”
- How is your relationship today with God? with others?
