Are You Amazed?

There is a word that we use a lot in the English language. An that word is amazing. They way
Space-x and NASA launched the Falcon -9 rocket from Florida on Saturday launch. Marking the first time since 2011 that a manned space flight has taken place in the United States. This morning it docked with the international space station.
Sports - amazing sports plays

Are you amazed at the authority by which jesus teaches.

nowhere is this better seen than in the sermon on the mount. As jesus is teaching and preaching he uses the words “you have heard…but I say to you”
the way he taught was different. the reason Jesus teaching was so different from what the Jews were used to is because they didn’t teach like that. scribes and pharisees taught what they had been taught or heard before. they imitated the teachers before. Jesus taught completely differently. rabbi said this and rabbi so and so said this etc.Jesus was not quoting the rabbinic traditions of their time.
the word for amaze here - to cause to be filled with amazement to the point of being overwhelmed, amaze, astound, overwhelm
another reason they are so amazed is because what He taught was different. His teaching is different from the scribes because Jesus is taking back what the Scribes and Pharisees had hijacked, the kingdom. God’s Gospel has been hijacked - God’s authority has been usurped. Jews had taken authority from God for themselves. Ch. 3 you are not doing the traditions that we do.
Mark 1:14-15
Mark 1:14–15 NASB95
Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
reigns of God is now
repent of what? Jews rejected the kingdom of God they hijacked the kingdom of God
Ch. 2:16 why is he eating with tax-collectors and sinners
v. 18 why do John's disciples fast?
v. 24 why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?
these were violations of their law not God’s law. They were making law that God didn't make (kingdom made up of king and subjects) His kingdom His Laws. CH. 3:2 legal action = accuse MK. 7:1-13 the tradition of the elders (trying to bind it on Jesus and His disciples) When you make law you become the king, they are putting the crown on their own heads
Jesus is taking God’s kingdom back Mk. 7:6-7 quoting Isaiah MK. 7:13 invalidating you can't bind law only the king can
MK. 12:1-12 parable of the vineyard v. 7 kill the kings son and they will take the fathers kingdom for himself they wanted the kingdom for themselves

Are you amazed and astounded at what Jesus can say and do?

can you imagine what it would have been like to see this happen. Allow your imagination a little time to run away this. I think this is often difficult for us when we get to demons and its not something we see everyday. Yes we see it portrayed in movies and TV shows and often times its even portrayed in a humorous way.
v. 24
Jesus - took that which was demonic, from satan, that overtaken the man and with his words cast it out. He released the man form his bondage to this demon.
and they were astounded. He has authority to even cast out demons. Rabbis couldn’t do that. What Pharisee or scribe could do that. His power His authority was so great that not even the demonic could overcome Him or defeat him
v. 27 what did they see and hear saw his power and heard his teaching. “what is this” new - better in quality. obey = hear - hear in order to obey. immediately - we cannot wait anymore we need to spread the word (1:28)

Are You Amazed at Jesus healing others and his ability to forgive sins? (Mark 2:1-13)

amaze - feeling of astonishment mingled with fear caused by circumstances which are hard to understand.
What are they astonished at and why was there a sense of fear?
they were astonished because He healed a man, he read the scribes mind, and he said, “you sins are forgiven”. this is another one of those stories I wish I would have been there to see it first hand.
Let me make a side note: would we go this far to help someone? do you have a friend that needs Jesus? one you know that needs Jesus because of their sin and various problems. and you know that Jesus is the answer, what are you going to do to get him to Jesus? Would you do whatever it takes to get them to jesus. they got around every barrier. they would not allow the barrier to prevent them from getting their friend to jesus. what barrier do we allow to get in the way of getting our friends to jesus. barriers of social interaction push them to hard they may stay sick and die lost. is our friendship more important than their friendship with God. Do the hard things.
Jesus obviously healed the lame man but he also read the minds of the Scribes. v. 6 in their hearts, v. 8 reasoning that way within themselves, v. 8 reasoning about these things in your heart.
Jesus has the ability to see into the hearts of men. Jesus knows whats in our hearts. 3:5 6:52 7:6 8:17 10:5 16:14 (hardness of heart)
Jesus knows whats in your heart. He knows if it pure and given to Him fully. He knows if its divided and given to another. He knows if your heart is selfish. When jesus looks into your heart, what does he see?
Jesus also forgave sins - I think this is were the sense of fear came from in the word for amazed here. They see and hear Jesus say your sins are forgiven.
the scribes are partly right in what they are thinking only God can forgive sins. By saying what Jesus said and doing what he is doing he is saying exactly that. I am God. And the proof that he gives of his ability to forgive sins is the healing of the paralytic.
Jesus has the ability to forgive your sins and my sins. Have you come to Jesus to have your sins forgiven? Have you been washed in the blood of Jesus through the watery grave of baptism so that your sins may be forgiven. But if you are a Christian have you fallen short of what God desires and expects for you in your life. Have you turned from Him and returned to that old way of life, seeking your own interests and following the ways of satan and the world.
did you know that Jesus can forgive those sins too. all Jesus ask is that you confess and repent. Make a change walk with jesus once again. What barriers keep you from returning and walking with Jesus again? Is it pride, Are you worried about what people think? Is it fear? What is preventing you from coming to Jesus to for healing and forgiveness.
