“Abuse of Power”
2 Samuel 11
Pastor Erik J. Ferguson
Sermon Idea: Drastic consequences await the church leader that wrongly abuses
their power.
Body:
I.
Manner #1: David neglected his kingly duties (2 Samuel 11:1).
A. David chose to buck tradition.
B. Whenever a leader neglects his or her duties, others are almost
always adversely impacted.
C. Leaders that neglect their duties set themselves up for a fall.
II.
Manner #2: David sinned with Bathsheba (2 Samuel 11:2-5).
A. Idleness quickly got the best of David--1 Peter 5:8.
B. David was given two choices: A=Flee from his temptation or B=Feed
his temptation.
C. David chose to take a 2nd look--Matthew 5:28; Leviticus 20:10.
III.
Manner #3: David attempted to camouflage his sin (2 Samuel 11:6-13).
A. David sent to the front lines for Uriah the Hittite, Bathsheba’s
husband.
B. Uriah was a just and honorable man.
IV.
Manner #4: David eliminated his problem (2 Samuel 11:14-25).
A. Uriah actually hand-delivered his own death sentence.
B. God sees our every move--Hebrews 4:13.
V.
Manner #5: David took Bathsheba as his wife (2 Samuel 11:26-27).
A. Bathsheba observed a period of mourning for her deceased husband.
B. Problem eliminated, David took Bathsheba as his wife.
C. The birth of the child so soon after David and Bathsheba’s marriage
may have exposed David’s sin, anyway.
Take Home Action: Pray that no church leaders fall.
