(18)  **And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

**(19)  **Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:**  (20)  **Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.

Why did they doubt?

2.     What were they doubting?

3.     Who was doing the doubting?

*Fact of the matter is, we do not know.*

1.     Isogesis:  Putting something into the text whether if fits or not.

! 2.     Exegesis:  Taking out of the text what is there, nothing more or less

There is enough here in this text and others to make a suggestion.

Who was doubting?

*A.    *People that were there were

1.     the disciples

2.     and up to 500 more

a.

Many commentaries new and old, church fathers and earlier writings put those 500 that Paul talks about in 1Co 15:6  /After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep ./here.

There could have been more than 500 people there

*B.    *But specifically which of the disciples (500 strong) or any of the 11 disciples, it doesn’t say.

*What were they doubting?*

*A.    *Was this the resurrected Christ?

1.     Phrase, “/and when they say him, they worshipped him . . .

a.

The word means to . .

.  in the NT by kneeling or prostration to do homage (to one) or make obeisance, whether in order to express respect or to make supplication

b.

With divine adoration, as the eternal Son of God; for so he was now declared to be by his resurrection from the dead

2.     Why would they bow to someone they doubted was the Messiah the very Son of God.

a.     Yet, there were over 500 there and some of them had not seen the resurrected Christ and may have not committed themselves as of yet.

b.    Surely the disciples would not have doubted this as at this point, they had all seen him.

*B.    *Was it where He was going to send them and what He wanted them to say that may have caused some type of doubt?

1.

They knew what they were going to have to say.

a.     and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in

b.

They were going to have to go and tell people that the person that was crucified some forty days earlier was indeed the Messiah.

c.

They were going to tell them that he is the way, the truth and the life and that no man can come to the father except by Him.

For there is no other name under heaven . . .

d.    What happen to Christ when He told them that He was the “I AM!?”  Crucificion

                                          i.

No one will be able to put to film all that the Son went through to purchase our salvation, but these people saw him suffer and die.

ii.

Now He is telling them to go back and say, Jesus of Nazareth was the “I AM!”

He is Lord.

2.     They knew where they were going to go: 

Act 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you:

a.     Jerusalem, If I get out of Jerusalem alive you want me to go where?

b.    and in all Judaea,  Judea was under the dominion of the scribes, and Pharisees, and priests.

If I get out of Judaea alive you want me to go where?

c.     and in Samaria, irreconcilable hatred arose between them and the Jews.   a place of resort for all the outlaws of Judea.

They received willingly all the Jewish criminals and refugees from justice.

If I get out of Samaria alive you want me to go where?

d.    and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

3.     Could the doubt be . . .

“I don’t know whether I can do this or not.”

I don’t do pain well.

I don’t want to die!

*Fact of the matter is, they went.

History proves that.

In addition, countless thousands after them*.

Amongst other things there are two things that these people had in common

1.

They all lived and ministered in this dispensation: the church age

2.     As great as they were, they are all dead!

THEY WROTE THEIR HISTORY.

THEY LEFT THEIR LEGACY.

Today, nothing has changed for over 2,000 years except the players

We still have our enemies that threaten shut us down and  to kill us –

·         Liberals governments (Canada and homosexuality)

·         Extreme Muslims

Can I do this, can I go?  Can I let my child go?  Can I do this?

·         Others in our life time have taken up the baton and have gone

o    Note our missionary list

o    In your minds eye, put the name or the face of a missionary you know that is “there” serving in some of the most difficult circumstance.

Amongst other things, there are two things that they have in common with us here

1.

We all live and minister in this dispensation:  the church age.

2.     We are writing our history right now and are committed to leaving a legacy.
