Good News for Burdened Believers

Psalm 55:22

Introduction

A. We're All Familiar with Burdens
1. We know physical burdens, financial burdens, fearful burdens
2. From the time of the fall, people have carried burdens
B. Jesus Invited the Burdened to Come to Him (Matt. 11:28-30)
Matthew 11:28–30 KJV 1900
28 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.
1. Those carrying heavy burdens were invited to come to Him
2. Those weary from carrying their burdens came to Him
C. There Is Good News for Burdened Believers
This Psalm is part of a 3 Psalm time of lament, praise, worship, and burdens.

I. What Can You Do with Your Burden?

A. "Cast thy burden upon the LORD"

a. Stop trying to carry your burden
b. God longs to carry it for you

B. Who is this burden carrier?

a. It is Jesus, who carried our sins to the cross
b. It is Jesus, who cares for you and me (1 Peter 5:7)

"To cast our burden on God, is to rest upon His providence and promise" (Matthew Henry)

II. What Will God Do with Your Burden?

"What God lays on you, lay on Him" (C. H. Spurgeon)

A. God takes our burden and sustains us by His love

“God can not only take my burdens and carry them; He can take my burdens and carry them and me with them!”
a. He takes our burden of sin (2 Cor. 5:21)
b. He takes our burden of sorrow (Isa. 53:4)
c. He takes our burden of grief (John 11:35);
d. God sustains those who were without strength
(Rom. 5:6)

III. God Takes Our Burden and Gives Us Blessings

1. He will never "suffer the righteous to be moved" (v. 22)
a. Here is certain security
"He who bore the burden of our sorrows, desires us to leave to Him the burden of our cares" (Matthew Henry)
2. This is demonstrated in the cross and resurrection
a. A dying thief trades his doubts for faith, hell for heaven
b. The cross proves God's all-sufficient love
c. The resurrection proves God's all-sufficient power
3. Those who rest full faith in the immoveable One will not be moved
III. Conclusion
A. Cast Your Burdens on Christ Today
B. You Will Find His Grace Sufficient for All Your Needs
1. He will forgive your sins and assure you of heaven
2. He will carry your burdens and give you peace
