intro

A phrase “the salt of the earth” was used to speak of a person you respected highly, and the type of person that dealt with difficulties or demanding situations without making an unnecessary fuss. I believe that the world we live in has become depleted of salt of the earth people. America was always was considered a “Salt of the earth” nation. There was a time you might have been able to say that the people who made policy and lead the nation were Salt of the earth people. This nation has been referred to as a Melting Pot but that is usually without the context that those who would not go along with the melting were mistreated, marginalized, and more than often massacred. The truth is most of the sociological, ethical, and racial tension are derived from the initial formation of America. This grand experiment called Democracy was the formation and concoction of what I call “ A Salt-less Melting Pot.” In our text today Jesus says “you are the salt of the earth
SALT is made from two chemicals NaCl Sodium Chloride. In Ancient Africa some salt came from the coastal nations but the lion share was from Salt Mines in Northern Africa. 90lb slabs were taken by sometimes 1400 camel caravans. Salt was carried from the mines which were dried up waterways almost 20 days journey through the sahara to Timbuktu. Then by boat down the Niger river. The salt was valuable for seasoning food but more so for preserving fish and meats. The further south one went the salt was traded for gold dust. Salt was a valuable commodity. It was the right alongside gold as a barometer of a nations wealth. As I watched the protest spawned this week by another senseless death of a black man at the hands and this time knee of a white uncaring police officer. I found myself overjoyed by what I saw. I said to myself I SEE SALT. See one of the key factors about salt is Salt has flavor. There was flavor in the protest. Young and Old, Black, Hispanic, and White, all genders, rich and poor, educated and uneducated with one voice crying out for real justice, for fairness, an end to unprovoked police violence. Not only does salt have flavor but it preserves, I saw these young people marching to preserve the dignity of all people who have an encounter with law enforcement. Some might say they didnt need to commit vandalism but it’s amazing that in this nation no one will hear you until you begin to cost them dollars or get in your pocket.
In our text Jesus makes a point of telling His followers that YOU ARE THE SALT OF THE EARTH.
WE HAVE SALT
God has made us to be salt in a decaying world. The lies, hatred, deception, murder, perversion, wickedness and lawlessness can be impacted by those who will be salt. Our christian walk offers an alternative to the life that is sold out to the ways of the world.
THE WORLD NEEDS SALT
There has never been a greater need for Christians to be salt than it has been this year particularly in our nation. People have lost careers, jobs, possessions, hope and if not for Gods grace might have lost their mind. The salt that Jesus puts in us allows us to have impact and make inroads into the lives of people he sends our way. Without salt this life would be tasteless and unappealing.
