Lament over the Destruction of America “How Can We Sing?” Inspired by Psalm 137
Marion: By the waters of beaches and the oceans white with foam~
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Sara: There we sit down, some of us angry, some anxious and traumatized and others just bitterly weep when we remember the dream that is America.
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Marion: On the poplars there we fear the hanging of our flesh.
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Sara: For there our oppressors ask us for songs of submission, and our killers ask us to be grateful and bear the brunt of their privilege, saying, entertain us with anthems to America!
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Marion: How can we sing the Lord’s Song in a foreign land? How can we be joyful when empire and injustice run rampant in our streets?
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Sara: Let us wither away if we fail to remember to rise, resist, dismantle and abolish the system set up for our demise as we cling to America’s promise.
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Marion: Let our mouths be parched with bitterness If we fail to be grateful for times when civility and true humanity flourished, bitterness if we fail to hold even the pipe dreams for our sweet, free America our highest joy.
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Sara: God in your mercy, handle the proud, haughty, self-indulged, murdering, lying tongues for their despicable conduct and actions. Remember the fall of the unrepentant wicked among us and how they have incited fear, division, hatred and debauchery.
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Marion: Oh descendants, despots and dictators of America, you have orchestrated devastation! Happiness and delight shall they be who witness you when you receive your punishment for what you have sown and what you have allowed to happen to us!
Kellie: How Can We Sing When We Can’t Breathe?
Sara: Happy shall they be when your young and vulnerable are laid dead before you as they have been also smashed violently against the stone.
