Acts 2:37–39 KJV 1900
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39 For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

Echo’s From the Upper Room

31 second youtube clip
One of the most iconic buildings in the town of Hamilton, located 15 miles southeast of Glasgow, is the Hamilton Mausoleum. But it’s what takes place inside its walls that makes it so intriguing. Built in the mid-1800s as a burial tomb for the 10th Duke of Hamilton, the 123-foot-tall Roman-style building was long billed as home of the “longest-lasting echo of any manmade structure in the world” thanks to its sheer size and shape. In fact, a single slam of its entrance door reverberates off the domed structure for a full 15 seconds.
the anatomy of an echo is simply a source of sound and a reflective surface…Given a definite sound and the right surface the sound can continue to travel.
My intent this morning is not to school you in the science of sound nor even to educate you in the anatomy of an echo…Rather to once again amplify the sounds that eminated from the upper room on the day of Pentecost some 2,000 years ago.
there were certain sounds that first noised from the walls of the upper room that still today echo through sanctuary’s and, of late, living rooms. Sounds produced on that day that Pentecost was fully come that still reverberate wherever the Name of Jesus is declared and the Gospel is preached. I want to preach for just a few minutes on these echo’s from the upper room.
The first sound produced on that day as 120 waited in the upper room. 120 gathered waiting for the promise as Jesus commanded them they should not depart from Jerusalem…but wait for the promise of the father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
And Acts chapter 2 vs. 1 tells us that us that when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came A SOUND FROM HEAVEN.
1. The first echo from the upper room that has got to be echoing in our churches…in our prayer rooms…in our small groups…is the sound from heaven!
If there has ever been a day and an hour that we need the reverb of revival…it is today. If there has ever been an time that we need the sound from heaven to once again fill the house where we are sitting.
We’ve got our ears tuned for so many other sources of sound...
I wonder what sound is coming from the White house
I wonder what sound is coming from the Governor
I wonder what sound is coming from the science labs that are trying to come up with vaccine...
No…there is only one sound that carries with it the harmony of healing...
Only one sound that carries with it the pitch of power to tread on serpents and the anointing to lay hands on the sick and they shall recover...
It is the sound from heaven!
This sound from heaven preceded Simon standing up to preach.
This sound needed to orator…this sound needed no choir to back it up. This sound needed no keyboard to help it find the right key....
And I think if we aren’t careful…we forget that all of this started with THAT sound!
we forget that Pentecost would have been just another day if it weren’t for THAT sound!
do you remember where you were when THAT sound from heaven first touched your world?
Do you remember the condition your life was in before THAT sound from heaven first changed your heart and your mind?
Oh Lord…that it echo from that upper room once again! let there come into this building today a sound from heaven as of a rushing might wind!
And if we aren’t careful, after we get further from Pentecost…we think think that we can do THIS without THAT sound!!!
2. The second sound that still echo’s 2,000 years later anytime there is a true Pentecost…anytime there is a true sound from heaven!
The sound of unbelievers
vs. 12 says of these unbelievers…they were all amazed. But then from the all that were amazed there are two subgroups.
the first group was in doubt…they were utterly perplexed…and they asked what meaneth this…this first crowd was inquisitive…they were amazed and they genuinely wondered…what is this!?!
Now if you are here today…or you are watching on line and you are wondering…what is this…No worries…We were all that way the first time we experienced Pentecost too!
But the second group that was amazed, began to mock! They began to make fun of what God was doing!
And there will always be a crowd mocking what God is doing...
it used to be they would sit there and laugh and make fun…its easy to poke fun at somebody of somebody else worshipping when you’ve never heard from heaven!
Nowadays you don’t have to laugh and poke fun..you can just get on your phone and text all service long...
2. The third sound that still echo’s from the upper room
Acts 2:4–11 KJV 1900
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.
The third sound that still must echo from the Upper room is the sound of the believers!
There are some today that say the Holy Ghost isn’t for the modern church.
That tongues isn’t for the church today…that its not necessary…there are those that would silence the echo’s from the upper room...
It was Jesus who said in mark 16:17
And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
Notice that the sound coming from the believers was nothing like the sound coming from the unbelievers...
the unbelievers were mocking and doubting while the believers were believing and receiving.
If there has ever been an hour that there needs to be a different sound coming from the church than is being broadcast by the world around us..it is today!
It was the sound from heaven that determined the sound from the believers.
Our sound must be determined by the sound from heaven.
Notice what caused the unbelievers to be amazed…they heard Galileans speaking the native languages of those that were gathered.
This was the feast of pentecost. Jews from all over had travelled to Jerusalem for the feast.
Pentecost has always been diverse!
The greatest revival that ever took place in Modern Oneness Pentecostalism took place in the early 1900’s, and it was every race and culture worshipping together.
Notice that it was the tongues and the languages of many nations…but it was one message. They spoke in the tongues of many nations, but the message that they were all declaring was the wonderful works of God.
The church…the true church of God should be the most diverse gathering of people in our community!
Every race. Every tongue. Every nationality. Every culture should be represented in the church...
But there should only be one message that we are declaring…the wonderful works of God!
4. The final sound that came from the upper room that still echoes in the church.
Peter stood up in front of that diverse crowd. Men and women from every nation and every tongue. Parthians, Medes, Elamites…various skin tones and complexions…men and women that were doubters and others who were mockers...
and he says to them this promise is for you…and for your children…and to all who are afar off!
And that sound still echoes in this church today…the Holy Ghost is for you!
it is for your children!
It is for your neighbors…your cousins…your co-workers...
The promise is still turning mockers into tongue talkers!!
The promise is still turning doubters into shouters!!
