What is Pentecost?

Feast celebrating the first produce of the Promised Land
Deuteronomy 26:9–11 NKJV
He has brought us to this place and has given us this land, “a land flowing with milk and honey”; and now, behold, I have brought the firstfruits of the land which you, O Lord, have given me.’ “Then you shall set it before the Lord your God, and worship before the Lord your God. So you shall rejoice in every good thing which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you.
Pentecost, the Feast of the Firstfruits, was a most appropriate time for the Spirit to come.
closely connected with Passover,
just as the Spirit’s coming would be associated with the saving events of the Lord’s crucifixion and exaltation.
The feast celebrated the first produce of the Promised Land, Israel’s inheritance, just as the Spirit is the “firstfruits” of the salvation blessings to the believer.

Why Did God Wait 50 days to Pour out His Spirit?

50 days from passover to giving of the Law on tablets at Hebron
50 days from the crucifixion of Christ to the outpouring of the Holy Spirit
Jesus was the true passover lamb and the Holy Spirit writes the law on our hearts
Jeremiah 31:33 NKJV
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
God used the feasts as opportunities to demonstrate His power for practical reasons.
People gathered in Jerusalem.
Validity to the outpouring
People from all over the world came, witnessed, and took the encounter back home.
God is Sovereign and Moves According to His Good Pleasure

What was the Purpose?

Empower Christ’s Church to be Witnesses
Mark 16:15–18 NKJV
And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Acts 1:5 NKJV
for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
Acts 1:8 NKJV
But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
The Baptism with the Holy Spirit is to Empower the Church for World Wide Evangelism

So What Happened at the First Pentecost?

Acts 2:1–4 NKJV
When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
They prayed, they were unified, they waited.
God descended from heaven in the Person of the Holy Spirit.
There came a Sound of a rushing mighty wind
Jesus - Holy Spirit came as a Dove (Peace/Unity in the Godhead)
Disciples - Holy Spirit came as a tornado (Fear of the Lord/Humbleness before God)
There came a sight of flame/fire
Matthew 3:11–12 NKJV
I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but He who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. His winnowing fan is in His hand, and He will thoroughly clean out His threshing floor, and gather His wheat into the barn; but He will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”
Sat upon each of them - The Holy Spirit set their knowledge on Fire
They began to speak supernaturally in unknown languages - The Holy Spirit set their words on Fire
They Spoke of the wonderful works of God vs 11
