AM I TEACHABLE?
AM I TEACHABLE?
Paul had promise the Jews in Ephesus that he would try and return, and true to hiw word that is exactly what he does.
but taking leave of them and saying, “I will return to you again if God wills,” he set sail from Ephesus.
EPHESUS
Jewel of Asia
capital city of the Roman Province
center of trade
sea port could accommodate the largest ships
main route from Rome to the East
the temple of Artemis - one of the seven wonders of the world
disciples - generic sense of the term or disciples as in followers of Christ?
uses of the word to mean followers of Christ - Acts 6:1-2; 9:19, 26, 38; 11:26, 29; 14:20-22; 15:10; 18:23, 27
can you be a Christian apart from possessing the H.S.
Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him.
He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
For in the case of those who have once been enlightened and have tasted of the heavenly gift and have been made partakers of the Holy Spirit,
The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.
By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.
H.S. - they didn’t receive it when they were baptized. Was he talking about the miraculous (v.6) or the gift of the H.S. They didn’t even know there was a H.S. which is interesting. Even the O.T. talked about the H.S. so were they not even Jews?
“into what were you baptized”
Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.
John’s baptism - differs from Jesus baptism, how?
preparation vs. fulfillment
repentance vs. faith
looks forward to Christ vs. looks backwards to Christ
confession of sins vs. confession of faith in Jesus
associated with no name vs. in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
no promise of the H.S. vs. promise of the H.S.
post-Pentecost believers with pre-Pentecost instructions
SIDE NOTE: Did Paul waste his time criticizing those who taught them?
v. 4 “who was coming” = Jesus has come at this point
v. 5 baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus
Are we teachable? If we find out we are in error, whether by lack of knowledge or mislead by false teaching will we accept the truth. Go back to Apollos who was eloquent and mighty in the scriptures, recieved instruction in the way of the Lord, fervent in the spirit - passionate, accurate in his teachings of Jesus but was only familiar with the baptism of John. These disciples were willing to be baptized into Jesus. Are we that teachable?
angry
make excuses
deny truth
negate necessity of baptism
honest, eager hearts
v. 6 The H.S. and speaking in tongues
Peter did the same thing to the Samaritans Acts 8:17-18 (2 Tim. 1:6; 1 Cor. 1:7; 12:10 only time Luke mentions Paul doing it)
And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
Then they began laying their hands on them, and they were receiving the Holy Spirit.
Now when Simon saw that the Spirit was bestowed through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money,
For they were hearing them speaking with tongues and exalting God. Then Peter answered,
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
was it show that this group too was accepted by God???

western text - adds from fifth to tenth hour (11 AM to 4 PM)
“You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs and to the men who were with me.
how I did not shrink from declaring to you anything that was profitable, and teaching you publicly and from house to house,
“Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.
PAUL’S TEACHING SCHEDULE
7-11 AM making tents
11 AM to 4 PM taught God’s Word in the school of Tyrannus
4 to 9:30 PM he made more tents

What does this say about Paul?
What does this say about the people?
“all who lived in Asia heard the Word of the Lord”
“You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away a considerable number of people, saying that gods made with hands are no gods at all.
