Message

Matthew 16:13–15 ESV
13 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” 14 And they said, “Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” 15 He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?”

“All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name”

All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ Name!

Let angels prostrate fall;

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all;

Bring forth the royal diadem,

And crown Him Lord of all!

Anti-Christian Heresy

Ebionism = insisted on humanity to the exclusion of deity… Great man / prophet of God who was endowed with the Spirit of God.
Gnosticism = 2nd cent-cultic movement - greek philosophy/ Persian dualism / Judaistic thought and Oriental mystery religion into Christianity = Mater is evil / Spirit is good.
Adoptionism / Modalism = God adopted Jesus as son / Three different modes God works in.
Docetism = Greek - Seem or appear = Jesus just appears to be human - material existence is bad.
Arianism = Jesus is less then God, made of similar stuff but not same stuff… First / Best of all created things.
Apollinarianism = Jesus was human body but devoid of human mind… basically a vessel for God to walk around in.
Nestorianism = Two persons with Two natures… Jesus relationship to God is no different then ours to God
Eutychianism = deity and humanity were mashed together causing Jesus to be something in between.
Without Christ, there is no Christianity
Which of these would you tend to lean more toward in your interactions with Jesus?

Christ’s Necessity

John 3:16–18 ESV
16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
Representative Obedience =
Romans 5:18–19 ESV
18 Therefore, as one trespass led to condemnation for all men, so one act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all men. 19 For as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Sacrificial Substitute =
Hebrews 2:16–17 ESV
16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham. 17 Therefore he had to be made like his brothers in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in the service of God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
Mediation: Priestly & Intercession =
1 Timothy 2:5 ESV
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
Hebrews 4:15–16 ESV
15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Original Purpose Fulfillment =
Example & Pattern =
1 John 2:6 ESV
6 whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.
1 John 3:2 ESV
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.
Cliff Notes
only someone who is infinite God could bear the full penalty for all the sins of all those who would believe in him—any finite creature would have been incapable of bearing that penalty.
salvation is from the Lord (Jonah 2:9 NASB), and the whole message of Scripture is designed to show that no human being, no creature, could ever save man—only God himself couldChrist’s Invitation
only someone who was truly and fully God as well as truly and fully man could be the one mediator between God and man (1 Tim. 2:5), both to bring us back to God and also to reveal God most fully to us (John 14:9).
We need Jesus! Without Jesus there is no Salvation!! Without Jesus you have no hope!

Christ’s Invitation

Matthew 11:28–30 ESV
28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
John 14:27 ESV
27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.
John 10:9–11 ESV
9 I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. 10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. 11 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
