And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
“For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.
“For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul?
“For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
“For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”
Why should I follow Jesus? Why should deny myself, take up and instrument of death, and follow Jesus? Why should I loose my life for Jesus? Why should I give up everything the world has to offer to follow Jesus? We have seen up to this point that...
the power of Jesus is one reason to follow Jesus.
power over demons
power over nature
power over disease
power of physical ailments
The authority of Jesus is another reason to follow Jesus.
He has authority over demons
his teaching is authoritative and not like scribes of His time
He has the authority to forgive sins.
Jesus truly does and says some amazing things
Jesus cares is a reason to follow Jesus.
Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
Does Jesus care when my way is dark
With a nameless dread and fear?
As the daylight fades into deep night shades,
Does He care enough to be near?
Does Jesus care when I’ve tried and failed
To resist some temptation strong;
When for my deep grief there is no relief,
Though my tears flow all the night long?
Does Jesus care when I’ve said “goodbye”
To the dearest on earth to me,
And my sad heart aches till it nearly breaks—
Is it aught to Him? Does He see?
Refrain:
Oh, yes, He cares, I know He cares, His heart is touched with my grief; When the days are weary, the long nights dreary, I know my Savior cares.
YOU BETTER BELIEVE JESUS CARES, YOU CAN TAKE IT TO THE BANK JESUS IS COMPASSIONATE AND MERCIFUL
Jesus The Merciful
Mark 5:1-20
Jesus encounter a man who is possessed with many demons
this man was a terrible sight to behold, wandered around naked, lived among the tombs, cut himself, was chained but broke those chains, he was constantly screaming and terrorizing all that came near.
Jesus cast Legion into the swine and they ran off the steep bank and into the sea and drowned.
when the people saw the man without the unclean spirits in Him they were frightened and implored jesus to leave their region. So Jesus did.
But, the man wanted to come with Jesus but he said no.
Mark 5:19
And He did not let him, but He said to him, “Go home to your people and report to them what great things the Lord has done for you, and how He had mercy on you.”
mercy - to be greatly concerned about someone in need, and have compassion, mercy, or pity
The blind man Bartimaeus Mk. 10:46f is crying out “have mercy on me”! Jesus sends for him and heals him. Jesus is merciful.
Heb. 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.
Heb. 2:17-18
Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Jesus the compassionate
Mark 1:41
Moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
here we have a leper, the out cast of society. He falls on his knees and says if you are willing, you can make me clean???
the bible says Jesus was moved with compassion
moved = angry How is Jesus angry with compassion? He is angry at the forces that oppose God, i.e. Satan and demons Mk. 1:25
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!”
He is angry at sin and its’s effect. the disease of leprosy and it effect on this man
He is angry Mk. 3:5-6
After looking around at them with anger, grieved at their hardness of heart, He said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.
The Pharisees went out and immediately began conspiring with the Herodians against Him, as to how they might destroy Him.
Why is he angry? Because his heart is is grieved at their hardness of heart.
Jesus cares that is why he angry and compassionate. If he didn’t care he would be unconcerned, dispassionate and cold in his interactions with people.
Do you realize what Jesus did here? He touched a leper. Why did he touch him? He didn’t have to touch him to heal him. He could have said the words, he could have looked at him, he could snapped his fingers, but no Jesus touched him. He touched a leper who had not been touched by anyone for years, in fact no one had probably even come near him for years and Jesus touched him.
the only explanation is Jesus compassion lead him to do that.
Mark 6:34
When Jesus went ashore, He saw a large crowd, and He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd; and He began to teach them many things.
just before the feeding of the 5,000 Mark records for us that tells the apostles to come away by yourselves to a secluded place and rest for they had not even had time to eat.
when they get in this boat the people see Jesus and they rush ahead of him. and that is when Jesus when we have recorded for us that Jesus felt compassion.
It seems as if Jesus compassion trumped his hunger and his tiredness.
they needed a shepherd to lead them to the quiet waters and a shepherd who can make them lie down in green pastures. Jesus feeds their tummies here and their souls.
Jesus truly cares!!!
Mk. 8:2-3
“I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.
“If I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way; and some of them have come from a great distance.”
Why does he have compassion on them? He has concern for their well being. Here they have stayed to hear and learn from Jesus and fears that if they don’t eat they may faint and not have the strength to make it home.
when you look at even the teachings of Jesus you find that taught that we are to be compassionate.
the good samaritan
prodigal son
wicked slave
JESUS ABSOLUTELY CARES
How much he cares is seen in these wonderful accounts that we find in the Gospel of Mark where we see Jesus full of Mercy and compassion.
when we follow jesus that is who we follow.
we should be comforted by the fact that Jesus is compassionate and merciful. He sees and even feels when we are are hurting, confused, and mistreated. He feels for us when we are lost and going astray and in His compassion he is calling and waiting for us to come to him.
He cares so much he grieves for us when hearts go hard and we turn away from Him.
Does Jesus care? Oh yes He cares I know He cares
there is no greater testimony to the fact that Jesus cares than the most compassionate and merciful act of all time which is jesus laying down his life for the sheep. Jesus laid down his life willing to hang on that cross for you and for me. As Paul would say we were his enemies and yet christ laid down his life for us. He saw that we were lost and in need of a shepherd and he had compassion love and tender mercy upon us and went to the cross for you and for me.
And because he did not stay in that grave but he is resurrected we can have forgiveness, hope, life in Him
and we can know that Jesus still has compassion
Heb. 2:17-18
Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.
Since our savior has compassion and mercy, those who claim to be His followers ought to also display compassion and mercy in their dealings with others. When people hurt we ought to hurt just like jesus did. Our compassion ought to lead us to move with action. to help and the oppressed and those ho are overlooked or mistreated and abused. In everyone of the passages we looked at Jesus didn’t just look at the people and say oh that to bad I feel for you but sorry about your luck. No he had compassion and that led to action.
What about you will you be filled full of compassion, Will you follow the compassionate Jesus?
Will you follow the compassionate Jesus and demonstrate that same compassion in your dealings with others?
