Sermon on the mount

Jesus teaching and preaching the gospel in the synagogues. He is healing disease and every kind of sickness.
Crowds start to follow him.
Matthew 5:1 NASB95
1 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him.
He was speaking to his disciples. The words He had were for them, but we know that others could hear.
Matthew 5:2 NASB95
2 He opened His mouth and began to teach them, saying,
Isn’t that great?Anticipation of what he was going to say.
Matthew 5:3–12 NASB95
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. 5 “Blessed are the gentle, for they shall inherit the earth. 6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied. 7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. 8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. 9 “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. 10 “Blessed are those who have been persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11 “Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Me. 12 “Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
The beatitudes are a state of being.
If you find your self in this state, not this is a state of being you should strive to attain.
It is a state of being that flows out from you.
Not necessarily a state of being you should strive to attain....
We are stupid
I’ve heard Christians brag about how humble they are. Let that sink in for a minute.
If we take the beatitudes and turn them into a goal, we will end up like the Phrases bragging about pious and religious we are.
They are all lowly positions based on the worlds standards.
Jesus is not giving instructions, per se, on how the disciples should be, but offering comfort to people for how they are.
Blessed - fortunate.

Poor in Spirit:

Poor - in the US means you don’t drive a new car and can’t eat steak every night.
It means you have to smoke generic cigarettes and buy off brand ketchup.
Poor - In Jesus time on earth meant you were totally dependent on someone else’s generosity or pity to survive. That you are left to beg others for the scraps off their table. That if you showed the slighted hint of anything other that total humility, you are going to starve.
Poor in spirit - are those that recognize that they are completely and utterly destitute in the realm of the spirit. They recognize their lack of spiritual resources and therefore their complete dependence on God.
Isaiah 66:2 NASB95
2 “For My hand made all these things, Thus all these things came into being,” declares the Lord. “But to this one I will look, To him who is humble and contrite of spirit, and who trembles at My word.
theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Those who mourn

Feel deep sorrow or regret.
Jesus doesn’t identify the object of mourning, but there is no doubt He is referring to a righteous mourning.
Loss of fellowship with God.
You know people that just feel things more than others. That loss affects them more.
you may also recognize that there are times that you are more sensitive to loss than others.
They shall be comforted.

The Gentle

Meekness.

Self-assertion is never a Christian virtue; rather, it is Christian to be busy in lowly service and to refuse to engage in the conduct that merely advances one’s personal aims

When Jesus washed the disciples feet it was an act of meekness or gentleness.
It’s not manly to be meek, but some of the strongest men I know are meek. It is the people that are either self consumed or lack self confidence that are incapable of gentleness.
Gentleness is a willful withholding of strength, not a lack of it.
They shall inherit the earth.....right now with everything that is going on, you may be thinking, they can have it...
But Jesus was referring to Psalms 37:11
Psalm 37:10–11 NASB95
10 Yet a little while and the wicked man will be no more; And you will look carefully for his place and he will not be there. 11 But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.

Hunger and thirst for righteousness

Posts condemning the rioting and looting.
Jesus was talking about hungering and thirsting for His righteousness in your life.
They shall be satisfied.
The first four beatitudes Jesus mentioned are a result of our complete dependance on God.
The next three are an outward expression of that dependance.

The Merciful

2015
The relatives of people slain inside the historic African American church in Charleston, S.C., earlier this week were able to speak directly to the accused gunman Friday at his first court appearance.
One by one, those who chose to speak at a bond hearing did not turn to anger. Instead, while he remained impassive, they offered him forgiveness and said they were praying for his soul, even as they described the pain of their losses.
“I forgive you,” Nadine Collier, the daughter of 70-year-old Ethel Lance, said at the hearing, her voice breaking with emotion. “You took something very precious from me. I will never talk to her again. I will never, ever hold her again. But I forgive you. And have mercy on your soul.”
They shall receive mercy.

The pure in heart

You cannot get there on your own.
Matthew 15:9 NASB95
9But in vain do they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the precepts of men.’ ”
They shall see God

The peacemakers

reconcilers
Luke 6:35 NASB95
35 “But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil men.
There is an earthly cost to being a peacemaker.

The persecuted

Theirs is the Kingdom
when people insult and persecute you.
Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great.
John 15:18–20 NASB95
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. 19 “If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you. 20 “Remember the word that I said to you, ‘A slave is not greater than his master.’ If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word, they will keep yours also.
