1 I will love You, O Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies. 4 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid. 5 The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.
Some moments in life we know will come. The timing of said moments often catch us by surprise. However, I am continuously amazed at God’s ability to speak to us in those moments through His word.
In Psalms 18, we read of David before he becomes King of Israel. God anointed him and prepared him, however, it was years before he fulfilled his assignment.
The process of becoming king included much tragedy, sadness, and sorrow. Because God’s hand was upon him, the enemy did all he could to stop David.
He used King Saul as the perpetrator of David’s misfortune. Even though David remained faithful to Saul, the king attempted to kill him many times, over twenty.
But David had something that sustained him in times of difficulty—his relationship with the Lord.
There are three parts to this hymn of praise—David’s Delight, Distress, and Deliverance.
1. David’s Delight
Psalms 18:1-3
As a devoted man of God, David expressed his deep love and affection to the Lord.
2. David’s Distress
Psalms 18:4-6
Notice: the ropes of death entangled him, the grave encircled him, but in his distress he cried unto the lOrd and Go heard Him!
3. David’s Deliverance
Psalms 18:46
David’s love for God sustained him and God delivered him in the hour of distress
We delight in what God has done, yet we feel great distress, but the Lord lives and we bless Him.
