Message

Before we get into the lesson tonight, I want to talk about what is happening in our world.
I’m not going to make a political statement...
I do want to make a few theological statements…
God does not condone the taking of a human life.
He does not condone abuse of power or situation.
He does not condone destroying another person’s life or livelihood.
He does not condone racism.
All these things are sin.
Every person is created in God’s image.
Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God does not treat people differently or look on them differently based upon ethnicity or race. We shouldn’t either.
Galatians 3:28 ESV
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
No person, especially no Christian, should ever treat another image-bearer of God, another human, in any of the ways I mentioned. God’s people should stand against all of these things.
We must also proclaim that the only answer to these things, the only answer to sin, is the Gospel of Jesus.
Jarvis Williams is a professor at SBTS. He wrote an article on all that is going on and in it he said this...
In this present evil age, the wages of sin will always lead to both spiritual death and physical death.
However, because God so loved the world that he acted to destroy the reign of sin by sending his Son, there is still hope right now in the midst of sin’s universal reign over the entire creation in this present evil age.
Our hope is only in the Gospel and we must proclaim that to the world!
I want to stop and pray now for our country.
pray
Well the Word of God speaks into the situation that our country is in right now. It speaks into every situation. Any situation that you find yourself in. The Bible speaks into in a real and relevant way. It may not always be right on the surface because the Bible was written in a different time, culture, and context than ours, but it is still completely relevant! We have to do the work of understanding the original context so we can understand how it speaks to our context. When we do, it informs us how to live and honor God. And that’s why it’s so important for us to know God’s Word, to study his Word, and to live by his Word.
Tonight we’re going to look at Psalm 119
We’re going to look at a few verses in this chapter and talk about what they tell us of the importance of God’s Word in our lives.
Psalm 119:9 ESV
How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.
Psalm 119:11 ESV
I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
If his Word is stored in your heart, you have Scripture memorized, then you can recall it when you need it.
Psalm 119:18 ESV
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law.
We should ask God to give us understanding of the Bible.
Psalm 119:28 ESV
My soul melts away for sorrow; strengthen me according to your word!
Psalm 119:37 ESV
Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways.
Psalm 119:46 ESV
I will also speak of your testimonies before kings and shall not be put to shame,
Psalm 119:60 ESV
I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments.
Psalm 119:89 ESV
Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.
Psalm 119:130 ESV
The unfolding of your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.
God’s Word gives us wisdom. It helps us understand this world.
Psalm 119:162 ESV
I rejoice at your word like one who finds great spoil.
Psalm 119:171 ESV
My lips will pour forth praise, for you teach me your statutes.
Psalm 119:97 ESV
Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
We must study and meditate on God’s Word. Spending time not just reading the Bible, but studying it. Searching it to know what it says and means and how it applies to our lives every day.
We’re going to work on that this summer! We’re going to study the book of 1 John over the summer. I’ll be teaching you a method of Bible study and then applying it to the section of 1 John we’re on that week.
My hope is to equip you can use to grow in your own study of the Bible. Find some different ways that are helpful to you and begin swimming deeply in God’s Word!
