Introduction

The previous part of this chapter focuses on how we should handle or navigate through trials & temptations. The second part of this chapter focuses on being doers of the word. If we say that we are Christians, children of the Most High God, then what we say and do should reflect that statement.

What we say and How we act depends on how we hear

James 1:19 KJV 1900
Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath:
From the previous verse we understand that anything good comes from God.
James 1:17–18 KJV 1900
Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. Of his own will begat he us with the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.
This sets a easy plan since because we were born in sin and shaped in iniquity that what helps us to make a change, we need more of Him; more of His Spirit; more of His word

SWIFT TO HEAR

So we must be swift - to hear
Romans 10:17 KJV 1900
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
The MSG translation says it this way - The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to

So we must be swift to hear the Word of God

why - because we primarily do or behave based off what we hear
we justify our decision based off what we heard someone said
My grandma said that
My mama said that
As a child, that’s why mama used to say first - do you hear me
And when she chastised us - didn’t i tell you
So when we are swift to hear the Word of God, it enables us to properly stand against the attacks of the enemy
Come with me to the wilderness - when Jesus is tempted in the wilderness - rather than Jesus speaking his perogative, He defeated Satan with the Word. He said IT IS WRITTEN
We as beloved brothers and sisters must be swift to hear
Do we hear what God says to us about Him? Do we hear what God says to us about ourselves? Do we hear what God says to us about others?
When you pray ask to hear His voice and He’s able to open up our ear that we may hear.
Revelation 3:6 KJV 1900
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Be swift to hear and then slow to speak.

What I hear from His Word constrains me to not speak what I want but rather what glorifies Him.
SLOW TO SPEAK
Causes me to be silent until I can speak with understanding
Someone who goes off on you; is disrespectful; lies on you
Rather than hearing their lies with your natural ear, with a spiritual ear you can hear God speak concerning their heart so rather than cuss them out, we pray for them
Ecclesiastes 5:2 KJV 1900
Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few.
We must be slow to speak.
And just because you thought it; doesn’t mean you should say it
Proverbs 10:19 KJV 1900
In the multitude of words there wanteth not sin: But he that refraineth his lips is wise.
Even a fool can look wise when he is quiet.
Slow to speak. Our tongue has to be bridled because
Proverbs 18:21 KJV 1900
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: And they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.
Satan who is the prince of the air, is listening. When we say we can’t do it, or we can’t make it; he takes our words to use against us.
When you say they are working my nerves; GUESS WHAT your nerves will be worked
We live in a carnal world that says express yourself, speak your truth, whether good or bad but His Word says listen to God and to the heart of people then carefully respond with your words.
James 1:13 KJV 1900
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:
Have you ever been in your feelings or said something in haste that you knew would do damage and you could actually see the words come out and you couldn’t get them back.
SLOW TO SPEAK
Because your words to lead to wrath
How many lives were lost because we didn’t think before we spoke
Men and women incarcerated because they said the wrong thing at the wrong time
And you can say the right thing at the wrong time and still be wrong

SWIFT TO HEAR - SLOW TO SPEAK - SLOW TO WRATH

WRATH COMES FROM HEARING THE WRONG INFORMATION & SPEAKING TOO SOON
Slow to wrath displays a vessel that is not filled with anger issues, quick tempered or not moving 0 to 100 real quick
Rather than argue to win the argument and lose a friend; hear God’s Word and lose the debate to keep a friend. If they are a friend, the Lord will convict them in due time and they’ll come to you and say brother, I want to apologize for what I said.
SLOW TO WRATH because
James 1:20 KJV 1900
For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God.
In other words, it is timeout for church bullies. You can’t be the righteousness of God and intimidating your brother and sister.
This is just not displayed in our words but also in our deeds.
Choir members would get mad because you didn’t sing their song
Preachers getting mad because they don’t get a chance to preach
Deacons & trustees getting mad because they’re not getting enough shine on them
Everybody wants to look important but don’t want to do what is important
And when it doesn’t go their way, we don’t see them for a month or two.
They are not MIA but AWOL = absence without leave
Our wrath removes us from the presence of God.
You mean I can’t be angry preacher? NO
Ephesians 4:26–27 KJV 1900
Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: Neither give place to the devil.
In other words, when we are angry and seek revenge, Satan is given footing in our lives.
An angry Christian can’t lead someone to Christ. We can’t be a witness when trying to get back at someone
We can only witness when we lay down the filth of this life and receive the engrafted word which is able to save your souls.
James said that we should receive the the word with meekness. In other words, the way we are to Him should be the way we are to others

Preacher, I thought you said the Word.

WELL JOHN SAID - IN THE BEGINNING - WAS THE WORD - AND THE WORD - WAS WITH GOD - AND THE WORD - WAS GOD
JESUS CHRIST IS THE WORD - SO WHEN I HAVE THE WORD - I HAVE HIM
NOW THEY SCANDALIZE HIM - CRITICIZED HIM - YEAH - SO DON’T THINK IT STRANGE - WHEN FOLK SCANDALIZE YOU - OR CRITICIZE YOU -
BECAUSE GREATER IS HE - THAT IS IN US - THAN HE THAT IS IN THE WORLD
WELL THEY WHIPPED THE WORD - THEY BEAT THE WORD - THEY HUNG THE WORD - ON A OLD RUGGED CROSS - HE HEARD THE CROWD SAY - CRUCIFY HIM - BUT HE WAS SWIFT TO HEAR - THE FATHER & THEIR HEARTS - SO HE SAID - FATHER FORGIVE THEM - FOR THEY KNOW NOT - WHAT THEY DO
HE WAS IN BETWEEN TWO THIEVES - ONE WAS CUSSING HIM OUT - BUT HE NEVER RESPONDED TO HIM - THE OTHER ONE SAID - LORD REMEMBER ME - I WONDER IF - YOU EVER ASKED THE LORD - TO REMEMBER YOU
WELL INSTEAD OF FOCUSING ON THE ONE - WHO WAS FIGHTING HIM - HE FOCUSED ON THE OTHER ONE - AND SAID - TODAY - YOU WILL BE WITH ME - IN PARADISE
BUT THE WORD DIED - YES HE DIED - AND I’M SO GLAD - HE DIED - BECAUSE HE DIED - THAT YOU AND I MIGHT LIVE - AIN’T THAT GOOD NEWS - BUT THAT’S NOT HOW - THE STORY ENDS - THREE DAYS LATER - HE ROSE AGAIN - AIN’T THAT GOOD NEWS
HE ROSE WITH ALL POWER - IN HIS HANDS -
1 Corinthians 15:55–57 KJV 1900
O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
WHEN I LEARN - TO BE SWIFT TO HEAR - SLOW TO SPEAK - SLOW TO WRATH - HE’LL GIVE ME THE VICTORY
