Introduction
As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him: Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
Built up = ἐποικοδομέω
Same as in 1 Corinthians 3:8–23
Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building. According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is. If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are. Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain. Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.

Paul mentored Timothy to minister after him, and instructed Timothy to do the same.

QUOTE — “There is no room on the platform with Jesus for another Saviour, whether Buddha, Mahomet, Dowie, Eddy, or what not. Jesus is the one foundation and it is gratuitous impudence for another to assume the role of Foundation…Clearly Paul means that on this one true foundation, Jesus Christ, one must build only what is in full harmony with the Foundation which is Jesus Christ.” — A.T. Robertson, Word Pictures in the New Testament, vol. 4, pg. 96
The Conclusive Option
The Conclusive Option
Any church founded on anything other than the simple and pure gospel of Jesus Christ is not a church at all.
Any congregation can claim to be a church, but only a congregation made up of born-again believers in the gospel of Jesus Christ can be a Biblical Church!

Gold
Silver
Precious stones
Wood
Hay
Stubble (Straw)
You get to choose the materials you lay on the foundation of Christ.
Choose wisely! It’s not automatic, it’s not forced, it’s completely up to you.
Some will decide to build with what will cost them the least amount of sacrifice — the least amount of time, money, effort, and commitment.
Others will give their lives an offering to the Lord and His church.
What you do, and with what you build, is completely up to you!

ILLUSTRATION: Built to Survive the Big One
In October of 2018, Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle, destroying everything in it’s path. Everything, except the house built to withstand the Big One. Just a year prior to the storm, Mr. King and his nephew built their “Sand Palace” right on the beach, with the goal of surviving a storm that had never been recorded in the area. Just the following year, their house was the only one left standing on their block. They say it probably cost them double per square foot to build it. The materials may have been expensive, but that house was the only house that weathered the storm.
Similarly, we have a test in mind when we set out to build up the body of Christ. At the time, the cost of the materials may seem high, but when you consider the trial by fire that’s coming, everyone of us would agree that we want our building to be still standing once that’s through.

ILLUSTRATION — 'Extremely' poor quality materials caused Bangladesh factory collapse May 23rd 2013
A GOVERNMENT INVESTIGATION found that “extremely” poor quality construction materials and a series of violations caused the collapse of a garment factory building in Bangladesh that has been called the worst garment-industry disaster in history.
The disaster killed more than 1,100 workers and highlighted the hazardous working conditions in Bangladesh’s $20 billion garment industry and the lack of safety for millions of workers who are paid as low as $38 a month.
“The owner used extremely poor quality iron rods and cement,” the committee head told The Associated Press a day after submitting the report to the government. “There were a series of irregularities.”
The report found that building owner had permission to build a six-story structure and added two floors illegally so he could rent them out to garment factories.
The report also said the building was not built for industrial use and the weight of the heavy garment factory machinery and their vibrations contributed to the building collapse.
The committee recommended that the building owner and the owners of the garment factories be sentenced to life in jail if they are found guilty of violating building codes.
These men refused to build on a proper foundation. They chose only the cheapest materials, and took many shortcuts. They destroyed not only the building, but the lives of those within its walls.
There are those out there today who reject Jesus Christ as the one and only true foundation for the Church.
They corrupt and destroy every ministry they touch with their teachings, considering only themselves.
God will reward the destruction they wrought on the church with eternal destruction in hell.
Be careful to know that your foundation is that One True Foundation, and that your motives are pure in the work of the ministry!
Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample. (For many walk, of whom I have told you often, and now tell you even weeping, that they are the enemies of the cross of Christ: Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

The Equitable Plan (18-20)
Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you seemeth to be wise in this world, let him become a fool, that he may be wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, He taketh the wise in their own craftiness. And again, The Lord knoweth the thoughts of the wise, that they are vain.
Just as the builder studies the architect’s plans, just as he seeks to understand the mind of the architect, just as he looks for the guidance of the architect in solving problems — a Christian endeavoring to build up the body of Christ, the church, ought to study the Bible, seek the mind of God, and rely on His guidance and wisdom in every area.
How many “gifted” and “talented” individuals have done damage to the church of Christ?
You cannot build up this building in your own strength and wisdom, you must seek the wisdom and strength of God.
If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him.
For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; And base things of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: That no flesh should glory in his presence. But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption: That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

The Eternal Goal (21-23)
Therefore let no man glory in men. For all things are yours; Whether Paul, or Apollos, or Cephas, or the world, or life, or death, or things present, or things to come; all are yours; And ye are Christ’s; and Christ is God’s.
Not Glorying in Men
Not Glorying in Men
For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise. But we will not boast of things without our measure, but according to the measure of the rule which God hath distributed to us, a measure to reach even unto you. For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men’s labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man’s line of things made ready to our hand. But he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord. For not he that commendeth himself is approved, but whom the Lord commendeth.
Only Glorying in God
Only Glorying in God
Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
