INTRO:
Last week recap-
Where does your confidence lie
Paul assured that his calling was from Christ
Where your confidence or hope is matters
Galatians 1:6–7 ESV
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— 7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.

Astonishment in Desertion

Paul avoids his typical commendation after the greeting, goes straight into correction
Why does Paul not offer any commendation?
Deeply troubled and angered by the Galatians response
Paul is amazed they do this
Breaking the window story
- Not the false gospel itself
Acts 20:29 ESV
29 I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;
Paul knows false teachers will come in
rather the quick surrender of the Galatians to the false teachings
Receiving something and throwing it away - Ex. Job, Relationship, Money, etc.

A Different Gospel, There isn’t One

Galatians 1:7 ESV
7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
vs. 6 - Paul states that the Galatians are turning to a different gospel
quickly interjects in this verse, there is no other Gospel
A reminder that hope or confidence is found in Christ
Psalm 71:5 ESV
5 For you, O Lord, are my hope, my trust, O Lord, from my youth.
from youth....right here, right now no other hope, gospel, or confidence other than CHRIST
not people
not things
not circumstances
CHRIST ALONE
This is what the Galatians were saved into and what they were turning away from
Wasted Gift
Why?
The Gospel was being distorted
How/ why was the Gospel being distorted?
wicked men came into the fold
Romans 16:17–18 ESV
17 I appeal to you, brothers, to watch out for those who cause divisions and create obstacles contrary to the doctrine that you have been taught; avoid them. 18 For such persons do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own appetites, and by smooth talk and flattery they deceive the hearts of the naive.
Matthew 23:5–7 ESV
5 They do all their deeds to be seen by others. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long, 6 and they love the place of honor at feasts and the best seats in the synagogues 7 and greetings in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others.
selfish ambition
riches
power
position
authority
all are reasons for false teachers to come and distort the true freedom of the Gospel
This becomes Jesus+

Jesus+

Galatians confidence not resting on the FINISHED work of Christ but adding to it.
Moralistic Deism - I follow rules and behave, I have earned right standing before God
Distortion of the Gospel is: my salvation is dependent on how good I am
I have to do more to make God be satisfied with me
John 19:30 ESV
30 When Jesus had received the sour wine, he said, “It is finished,” and he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
it is finished!
He did all the work on the cross
not just salvation from sin, but the wrath of God
All pass or all fail test…24/7 can’t make a mistake…miss one and you fail the whole test…YOU HAVE FAILED! I HAVE FAILED…We get an F…(in our culture grounding or discipline for failing)…Jesus fully passes the test…Gives you His A+, takes your F and the punishment to go with it
This is the good news of the Gospel…You did nothing to earn it or sustain it
it is Him!
STOP
Read Galatians 1:6-7 What false teachings or gospels have you heard? What are the differences compared to the true Gospel?
Read Galatians 1:10 In what ways have you sought the approval of man rather than God? Why did you not trust God in this situation, where did you believe but had unbelief?
