Introduction
Greetings...
We have been studying the “Beatitudes Of The Bible” and find ourselves recently in the Sermon on the Mount.
Having last week examined “Blessed Are The Merciful” this week we are going to look at “Blessed Are Those That Are Pure In Heart.”
As God’s children we are to practice “pure and undefiled religion.” (James 1:27).
This means not only have pure doctrine on our side (Job 11:4) but ourselves as well.
Jesus understanding this perfectly then makes a statement of motivation for such in Matthew 5:8.
8 “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
So the question then that must be asked is…
Why are the “pure in heart” blessed?
The Three “S”
The Three “S”
They Are Sincere.
They Are Sincere.
The pure in heart don’t have “mixed” or “impure” thoughts.
7 Show yourself in all respects to be a model of good works, and in your teaching show integrity, dignity, 8 and sound speech that cannot be condemned, so that an opponent may be put to shame, having nothing evil to say about us.
The pure in heart are authentic.
12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.
The pure in heart don’t strive to deceive others.
17 For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.
The pure in heart are sincere which means they are have pure thoughts, are authentic, and don’t try and deceive others.
Also…
They Are Simple.
They Are Simple.
They are not simple in any intellectual way but in how they deduce life.
Those that are pure in reduce life to its most basic reality and rightfully so.
3 But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
Truth is not that complex. It is error that makes things complicated and complex.
For the pure in heart life isn’t complex, for them truth is truth, right is right, and wrong is wrong.
15 To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled.
They Are Serene.
They Are Serene.
The pure in heart are “marked by…utter calm and unruffled…quietude.” 1
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8 Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. 9 What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.
Summary
Summary
The pure in heart are sincere, simple, and serene people who love God and his word.
It shouldn’t surprise anyone then to learn…
They Live Clean Lives
They Live Clean Lives
Pure Heart = Pure Life.
Pure Heart = Pure Life.
James declared in his letter…
17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
We “require” the greatest source of purity in our lives, Christ Jesus, if we are to live clean and pure lives.
In fact, our faith in Christ is what creates in us a pure heart.
9 and he made no distinction between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith.
Obedience to Christ and his word is what keeps our hearts pure.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
This is why we must let Christ live in us, and work through us.
20 I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
However, a…
Corrupt Heart = Corrupt Life.
Corrupt Heart = Corrupt Life.
If we don’t allow Christ to rule lives uur hearts will be corrupt and we will live corrupt lives.
We might have the “appearance” of purity but are rotten on the inside.
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. 26 You blind Pharisee! First clean the inside of the cup and the plate, that the outside also may be clean. 27 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people’s bones and all uncleanness. 28 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness.
There is no other way to put it, we will be corrupt not righteous.
8 Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith.
10 But these speak evil of whatever they do not know; and whatever they know naturally, like brute beasts, in these things they corrupt themselves.
Summary
Summary
The pure in heart live clean, pure lives.
The thought of their heart becoming corrupted hurts them so that they will stop at nothing to stay pure.
Why is this the case?
Why are they willing to do anything to stay “pure in heart?”
Because…
They Have A Great Promise
They Have A Great Promise
The Pure In Heart Will See God.
The Pure In Heart Will See God.
Isn’t that what we, the chosen few, the elect, have been waiting for and striving for our whole lives!!!
And here Jesus declare, with such simplicity what it takes, it takes a pure heart.
2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
3 Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? And who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to what is false and does not swear deceitfully. 5 He will receive blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his salvation. 6 Such is the generation of those who seek him, who seek the face of the God of Jacob. Selah
Summary
Summary
When we strive for purity or holiness we will see the Lord.
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
Conclusion
Conclusion
Again, why are the pure in heart “blessed?”
They are sincere, simple, and serene.
They live a clean life.
They have the greatest promise there has ever been for mankind, “they will see God.”
Invitation
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
6 And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
32 “Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven.
8 in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures,
3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
