What Is Sin?
What Is Sin?
According to Biblical definition, sin is missing the mark and the mark is God’s Word.
When we go against what the Word of God says, then we are sinning.
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may increase?
2 God forbid! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
There are different types of sin, but they are equal in the sight of God.
There are sins of commission and sins of omission.
Sins of Commission: Things that we do against God!
Sins of Commission: Things that we do against God!
There are sins that we know not to do that we do.
These are the sins of commission.
9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor male prostitutes, nor homosexuals,
10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.
11 Such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, and you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus by the Spirit of our God.
There are many different areas that give lists of sins.
Some are extensive while others are concise.
The point is that we are to avoid the sins that can easily distract us and hurt us.
An important ideal to remember is that there is grace to counteract what the sin can do in our lives, but we are not to take advantage of the grace that we are afforded through the cross.
These sins are most commonly thought of because of the nature of sins that we commit.
lying
murder
drunkeness
sexual imorality
idolatry
adultry
homosexuality
stealing
...etc.
These are the sins that we can associate with.
Sins of Omission: Things that we do not do for God!
Sins of Omission: Things that we do not do for God!
These sins are those that we usually overlook due to there nature.
17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, it is sin.
When you know what God has called you to do or has instructed you to do something and you do not do it, James says that it is sin.
Those things that we have been instructed to do:
Reading your Bible
Praying to God
Fasting
Witnessing
Praying for someone
Do good to others
…etc.
These are the things that we are told to do in scripture and that strengthens our relationship with the Lord, but we do not do them.
The sin of omission can be overlooked because it’s usually not a thing that everyone can see.
This can usually lead to us not doing what we are instructed to do, because no one can see what we have done.
Let’s be clear, if we do not do these things that we are instructed to do, it will be seen in how we act or react to the circumstances in our lives.
When God gives us a task to do, He will equip us and instruct us, but if we neglect the process and do things our own way, we have fallen into the sin of disobedience.
This is just as much a sin as the sin of adultery or murder.
Sin is sin!
You do not have to stay in the chains of sin!
You do not have to stay held down by the weight that sin puts on you!
You can be free of the sin that plagues your life.
It can be a sin that you do or a sin that you do not do!
Why Do We Sin?
Why Do We Sin?
Why do we sin?
Seems to be an easy question to answer, right?
We sin because of the sin nature of the world and the sin nature of the flesh...
If it was that easy to answer, then why do we fall to the sin in our lives over and over again.
If we know what and where sin comes from, then why do we circum to the temptations continuously?
We are weak in and of ourselves.
We must rely on the Holy Spirit to give us the strength to stand against the attacks of the enemy.
We do sin because of the influence of the world.
We do sin because we give in to the temptations of the enemy.
We do sin because we participate in the sin of omission (lack of prayer, bible reading, fasting, etc.).
Sin does appeal to our flesh!
Sin is pleasurable, but only for a season.
Eventually sin will lead to an increased desire for the things of the world.
As Christians, we should recognize sin as soon as we see it, but we have participated in the sin for so long that we have become comfortable there.
13 No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, and He will not permit you to be tempted above what you can endure, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it.
We will give in to sin daily if we do not pay attention.
He said that He would not permit you to be “tempted above what you can endure.”
If this is true, why do we fall to the temptations?
We have a choice to take the “way of escape” or reject it!
When temptation comes, we are given a way our each and every time, because that is what the Word says!
If we believe that the Bible is true and without error, then we must believe that God has made a way of escape each and every time!
2 God forbid! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?
We are to live and if we are to live, then we have to die!
We must accept that we can not participate in the activities that we once participated in when we were in the world.
We must accept that we can not hang out with those that we used to hang out with when we were living in the world.
We must accept that we are in Christ and Christ is in us if we have given our heart to the Lord!
We sin because we give in to the enemy!
We sin because we are lazy!
We sin because we are ignorant!
This is why we must allow the Holy Spirit control and take the time to get into the Word of God!
How Do We Get Out of Sin?
How Do We Get Out of Sin?
What happens when we fall into sin?
Usually, we don’t fall into sin. Like we don’t fall into love either.
Sins can come at us suddenly through an attack of the enemy trying to catch us off guard.
This is why we should always stay alert!
8 Be sober and watchful, because your adversary the devil walks around as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
The devil is roaming around looking for those who he can trip up.
Those are usually the ones who have just received a blessing from the Lord.
If he can get to you soon, he can try and convince you that God has not forgiven you because of what you have done!
Ultimately, we get out of sin by admitting that we are sinning.
Then, we must recognize who Jesus is.
Third, we ask Him to forgive us of our sins.
Fourth, confess with our mouths that He is Lord of our life!
Last and very important, we must keep it up!
Sins start in the mind through our thoughts.
This is why we have to confess it with out mouths so that everyone, including you and the enemy can hear it!
It’s your choice!
You can stay in your sin filled life, or you can realize that you do not have to sin anymore.
We can get caught up in thinking that we sin because we can’t help it, but i would purpose to you this morning that you sin because you feel like you have too.
The reason you have to is because of the flesh and what it tells you daily!
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand, for I do not practice what I will to do, but I do the very thing I hate.
16 But if I practice what I do not will to do, I agree with the law that it is good.
17 So now it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells in me.
18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) dwells no good thing, for the will to do what is right is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.
19 For the good I desire to do, I do not do, but the evil I do not want is what I do.
20 Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who does it, but sin that lives in me.
We do what we do not want to do, because we give in to the lies of the flesh.
The flesh tells us that we are to continue doing the things that God has delivered us from, while the spirit is gently telling us that we do not have to do those things anymore.
We must pay attention to what is going on around us in this world.
38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
We have to understand that this world will not be around much longer, as it is!
