The Sword of the Spirit, The word of God
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
Intro: Protesting may change some things, but it want change the world. Rioting may change some things, but it want change the world.
God’s word, “The sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God” in the only thing that will change the world.
6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brethren to the rulers of the city, crying out, “These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.
Jason hosted Paul, Silas and Timothy in his home at Thessalonica. They preached Jesus.
God’s word will change lives.

17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
If you are going to live the Christian life, you will be attacked by the enemy. God has given us the Armour of God so we can stand against the schemes of the devil.
a. We can fight back, but not on our own, not by human force. We have to use spiritual weapons.
b. God gives us the ability to fight back through the power of the Holy Spirit.
c. The sword of THE spirit, not a spirit. This is the Holy Spirit. The sword belongs to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is God. The Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
d. It is the Holy Spirit that helps us to stand. VS 11, VS 13
2. How the Holy Spirit works in the life of a believer:
a. He saves:
13 In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.
“You were sealed” A stamp: In ancient times Kings would seal a document. It was known who sealed it. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit. Read rest of verse.
b. Th Holy Spirit saves us, He also sanctifies us. Means set apart.
13 But we are bound to give thanks to God always for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God from the beginning chose you for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth,
c. We are set a part, we are to live different than the world. We can only do this through the power of the Holy Spirit.
d. We will be attacked, but God has given us the sword of he spirit to fight with.
e. Jesus is coming back one day to get us. But until then, He doesn’t leave is alone.

The Roman Solder had a sword so he could fight back. The sword could be used both as an offensive and defensive weapon. (My brother and I sword fights)
a. The sword the Roman solder used was a short sword. Dagger. He would hold his shield in one hand and his sword in the other hand. And fight for his life.
First Sword in Bible
24 So He drove out the man; and He placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life.
The was fat king that was stabbed with a dagger, (same Hebrew word used for sword)
22 Even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out.
1. Swords were used in battle for many years. WWII Japanese used a Samara sword.
a. Our military swords ceremonial. But still use bayonets, but rarely. But still use knifes, K-bar.
b. God gives us as part of our Armor a Sword.
2. We have to use it for the right reason.
“Christ is to be the focus of the entire Bible, and you need it to study it to know what He is like. To often we study the Bible for the sake of theological arguments or to answer questions. Those things are important , but the main point of Bible study is to know more about Christ so we can be like Him”
a. Don’t argue God’s word with a lost.
3. To know how to use our sword, we need to understand just what it is.
a. Solder had to know how to use his sword.
b. It had to be sharp.

Word Study:
Elab the Bible. Some hold it up, this is my sword. Use like something that holds off evil spirits.

Word: Logos. Means message.
2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.
Same word, Logos. Jesus is the message, Paul told Timothy, preach the message. The Logos.
a. Here is VS 17 “Word of God” GW Hray-mah Utterance, the spoken word.
3. We have the scripture, (the written word) which contains the message, and we use the message by speaking “the sword of the Spirit”
a. We have this sword to do not only defend ourselves, but see great things happen.
37 Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Men and brethren, what shall we do?”
a. This the day of Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit came down. Elab . Peter preached the message, his took the message, and spoke it (the sword of the spirit) and it “Cut to the heart” KJV pricked their hearts.
b. We have the Sword of the word to do the same thing. Face to face share Jesus with someone and allow God word to show them they are lost and in need of a Savior.
4. The sword that is the word of God is alive, and it is powerful.
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
God’s word will get you through anything that you are going through.
God’s word will convict you of sin.
God’s word (sword) will protect from the schemes of devil. In this verse it the spoken word.
Luke 4:1-13
Jesus spoke the Scriptures, this was the Sword.
We need to pray the word, we need to know the word, we need to use it against the devil.
Use the sword of the spirit to give strength.
Use the sword of the Spirit to help overcome temptations.
Use the Sword of the spirit to fight against all the shicmes of the Devil.
