Romans 11:33–36 ESV
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” “Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?” For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
With this passage Paul concludes everything he has said in this letter to the Romans so far. There are such great verses in Romans aren’t there?
Romans 1:16–17 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”
Ah, yes. Do you know about the righteousness of God. Do you know of his purity? Do you know that there is no way to have a righteousness that is not your own?
Romans 1:18 ESV
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.
Do you know the wrath of God? Do you know his fierce disposition against sin and all that robs Him of glory and destroys humanity?
Romans 3:23 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Do you know the depth of sin? Do you know the depravity of man? Do you know how deep your sin goes into the very bit of your being? Do you know how much you’ve fallen short?
Romans 5:8 ESV
but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Do you know of His love? Do you know that it’s not conditioned on you? Do you know that it flows from His character and not our performance?
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Do you know that our sin brings forth death? Do you feel the world is broken? Do you feel the ravages that sin has brought about in your own life and in all those around you? Do you know that there is rescue? Do you know that there is eternal life?
Romans 8:1 ESV
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
Do you know that in Christ there is absolutely no condemnation? Do you know the depths of that condemnation? Do you know that his forgiveness is greater? Do you know that every sin you’ve committed—the wages for every one of those is paid in Christ? Do you know?
Romans 8:37–39 ESV
No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Do you know the riches of his love? Do you know the depth of his love for you? Do you know that nothing can separate you from the love of God?
Romans 10:13 ESV
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
Do you know that everyone…no matter what you’ve done…can call upon the name of the Lord and be saved?
Friends, we hear this and shout on all of these things! Yes, I know them! I know these truths! These truths stir me up. But might we take them to what Paul said in worship and wonder at Romans 11:33-36 and say…we don’t know a thing. We’ve only scratched the surface!
We do not know the depths. We cannot provide Him counsel. We cannot stand over him on any of these truths and say “this is how it must be done”. No, even if you’ve been mining these truths for 80 years you’ve yet to hit even close to bedrock.
This is not to cripple us. This is not to breed passivity. But it is to push us into Christ deeper still. If I know “THIS” of his love and it’s only scratched the surface of the depth of this!!! Oh....give me more! Oh let me dig deeper and deeper.
