Question & Answers Round 3
Welcome
Intro
This morning will be looking at some questions these questions may not go together but we will still answer them
We will be using the Bible the Holy Word of God to answer them
Church it is our responsibility to answer these questions
This is our opportunity to be a voice of truth when the world needs it most
We have used John the Baptist as our example of being one speaking truth no matter what
See for John the Baptist did just that
He called sin sin and spoke truth to prepare the public to hear from Truth Himself Jesus Christ
And church we should do just that
It is our opportunity to share the good news of Jesus Christ with people right now
Not so that we can put them down, not so that we can debate them but rather so that the Love of Jesus can come into their heart, so that we can be obedient to what the Lord calls us to do
And church right now our world needs truth to be shared
So our questions will center around killing, and they will be specific but I think it is only right to answer them
Why does He tell Abraham to kill his son and then basically say just kidding, that was a test?
1 Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.”
God was going to test Abraham
Then we sit back and go but why test Abraham
Well God wanted to see if Abraham loved his own son more than he loved God
See Issac was not just your ordinary child
They had tried for years and years to have a child and then Sarah told Abraham go have a child with my servant and that will be our child
Well as you can imagine that cause so many problems
Sarah becomes jealous of Hagar and Ishmael
Ishmael is then part of the promise from God that Abraham will father the nations
But because they child is not within the bounds of Gods plan there are problems
Remember that God has promised Abraham and Sarah a child
Now the child is born hurray things are great now
God wants to know if Abraham loves Him and trusts Him
Because before it didn't seem like Abraham trusted God to give him a son
So God tests Him
2 He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” 3 So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him. 4 On the third day Abraham raised his eyes and saw the place from a distance. 5 Abraham said to his young men, “Stay here with the donkey, and I and the lad will go over there; and we will worship and return to you.” 6 Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the fire and the knife. So the two of them walked on together. 7 Isaac spoke to Abraham his father and said, “My father!” And he said, “Here I am, my son.” And he said, “Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” 8 Abraham said, “God will provide for Himself the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” So the two of them walked on together. 9 Then they came to the place of which God had told him; and Abraham built the altar there and arranged the wood, and bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.”
See God knows that Abraham trusts the Lord, Loves the Lord
God desires that we Love the Lord our God with our entire being
Let that settle in that God wants 100% from his children
We are to Love the Lord our God with our 100%
Right now think of your life, are their areas of your life you are not loving Jesus?
understand that our love for Jesus should be so much more than anyone else that it would look like that we hate them
but we don’t because we are loving Jesus
26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
Some might say but why does God test people
IT doesn’t say that He doesn’t test me or that it won’t test people
In fact it says that He will test people, that we will test them to ensure they are walking with Him and to ensure they are a righteous people
2 “You shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.
They were tested so that God would know and they would know what is in their heart
And let me be clear this morning
If their are areas of your life that you are not loving God then you should repent and seek the Lord
Because I know for sure that God is waiting for you and I to do that so that we can return to a closer walk with Jesus
The next question is
Why does He say not to kill but then instruct Israel to turn around and kill men, women and children to take the promised land?
this one is a tough one because with it come a whole host of other questions
To be clear the Bible doesn’t say to not kill it does say to not murder, with murder there is some sort of intent involved
But God does say that we are not to murder that we are to intend to kill people
And God does send the nation of Israel into the promise land to kill everyone
So to answer the question why God does God send the nation of Israel into the Promise land to kill everyone
5 Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
People’s default nature is to sin
Peoples default to bad things, evil things
We need to understand that the people in the promise land were not innocent and were sinning against God
2 The Lord has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, Who seek after God. 3 They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one.
No one is good except God alone
We must understand they are a wicked people
1 “Hear, O Israel! You are crossing over the Jordan today to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than you, great cities fortified to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard it said, ‘Who can stand before the sons of Anak?’ 3 “Know therefore today that it is the Lord your God who is crossing over before you as a consuming fire. He will destroy them and He will subdue them before you, so that you may drive them out and destroy them quickly, just as the Lord has spoken to you.
Stop reading do not read ahead
God is coming to dispose of the people in the promise land so that the Nation of Israel can come in
God is using the nation of Israel
This is Gods plan for the nation His chosen people
God cannot and will not coexist with evil
God people are a part of Him and He is the head, and his people cannot and will not coexist with evil
If you will recall from last week because of sin there had to be blood shed
If you read through the Leviticus, there were a number of laws that you could be put to death for
And praise God for sending His son that we longer have to live under the Law but we live according to Grace through faith in Jesus Christ
4 “Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God has driven them out before you, ‘Because of my righteousness the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’ but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. 5 “It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
God is telling the nation of Israel that it is not because they are so much better that God is going to wipe these people out
But it is because of their wickedness
Then it is not because the nation is so much better that He is giving it to them but it is because of a promise God made to their fathers
This shows us a few things this morning
God can and will test you to know what is in your heart
God cannot and will not be a part of evil
God is faithful to His promises
This morning as we close and move into a time of invitation
13 for “Whoever will call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
God is faithful to what He says and He says that if anyone will call upon the name of the Lord He will be saved
Sinner, saint, jew, greek, free, slave, rich, poor
No matter who will call upon the name of the Lord He will be saved
Praise the Lord He is faithful to His promises
So maybe that Is you
Maybe you have had some of these same questions the past few weeks and you are starting to hear truth and see truth
Maybe you are here today and do not have a personal relationship with Jesus
We would like to invite you to come to the front and talk with someone who can open up the word of God and show you this morning how you can accept the free gift of Jesus dying on the Cross and walk out of the building today a free man, a new creation
Or maybe you are here today and understand that there are areas of your life in which you are not loving Jesus with your entire being
This is God’s call to repent and return to Jesus this morning
So maybe you need to come to altar and repent
or maybe you simple need to come to the altar and spend sometime in prayer
the altar is open
