A Reproved World
A Reproved World
7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
As the Lord nears the end of his earthly journey, He continues to teach and equip his disciples.
Preparing them for what was to come
Preparing them for the needs that they would have personally
Preparing them for their purpose in continuing his eternal plan
Part of this preparation process was to introduce the Holy Spirit of God to them and what His Place and purposes would be during this transition - hand off...
Jesus was the comforter up to this point - His presence in the life of his followers...
The Lord was going back to heaven and the Blessed Holy Spirit of God was to come and actively continue that role and so much more...
But as we look at the Holy Spirit, we see not only His Person and presence announced again (jn14.1-3) we see new roles laid out...
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
A Reproved World
A Reproved World
The word reprove is one that is connected between instruction and discipline.
Isn’t it ironic that when it comes to academia - the branches of study are in categories called disciplines:
ie...
Disicpline............................Branch................................
Business...........accounting, economics, finance, magement, marketing
Humanities.......art, history, languages, literature, music, philosophy, religion, theater
Social Sciences....Anthropology, education, geography, law, political science...
education takes and requires discipline -
If a child is going to learn - there has to be discipline
structure
instruction
discipline to teach and discipline to adhere:
alert, aware, active participant,
enlightened, engaged, involved
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Sixteen: What in the World Is the Spirit Doing? (John 15:18–16:16)
The key word here is reprove (John 16:8). It is a legal word that means “to bring to light, to expose, to refute, to convict and convince.” It could be translated “pronounce the verdict.”
The Lord Jesus is the Truth -
The believers are the witnesses -
The Holy Spirit - who is the comforter to the believer, is the prosecuting attorney to the lost.
Pointing out the guilt -
Convicting and convincing of condemnation
Here we see 3 things that the Holy Spirit is “reproving the world for”
Of Sin
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
the reproval of sin is not the general condition of sin - we can do nothing about that -
God is a just God - The unregenerate state of man is not the issue - it is the condition…
12 Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:
there is nothing we can do about the sinful or Adamic nature we possess - But we can deal with its consequences.
Sin of unbelief
There are a lot of sins, but the greatest sin that you can commit is a sin of unbelief
What sin is it that causes a person to go to hell?
12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.
36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
Unbelief is a grave sin against the Almighty
1 The heavens declare the glory of God; And the firmament sheweth his handywork.
3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
*Of Sin
Of Righteousness
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
The Spirit “reproves” / convicts “of righteousness” not of unrighteousness
We are already condemned - being judged for what you are already condemned of is of no use...
The Spirit reproves of righteousness - the Righteousness of Christ...
He is the only hope
His righteousness
His goodness
There is only One who was perfect, holy, righteous...
The Lord Jesus Christ
When we see the righteousness of Christ and then the sinful condition of self - we can see our need for the Savior...
If we do not See HIM -
If we do not see ourselves falling miserably short -
What motivation would there be for believing...
The Holy Spirit -
Reproves of Sin
Reproves of Righteousness
3. Of Judgment
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
The prince of this world - Satan
The charges have been filed
The prosecution has leveled it’s case
The verdict has been passed
The sentence has been stated
THE ONLY THING LEFT IS THE EXECUTING OF THE SENTENCE...
Blessed be God, the Devil is going to get his...
ALL THE SIN
ALL THE HATE
ALL THE VIOLENCE
1 And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.
2 And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,
3 And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
7 And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
8 And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
9 And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them.
10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:
9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
Of Sin
Of Righteousness
